  3. Schoolgirl commits suicide at shool due to racist bullies abusing her.
Dagmara Przybysz, 16, who moved to the UK with her family nine years ago, died at her school, Pool academy in Redruth, Cornwall. She had previously been told she “did not belong here”.

Dagmara was described as a beautiful, happy and popular pupil who had an extremely bright future and planned to study photography at college. But the inquest heard she had confided to friends and family that she had been singled out because of her nationality by bullies who called her a 'stupid Pole' and told her she “did not belong here”.

Her mother, Ewelina Przybysz, said she understood her daughter had been having a problem with one girl who had 'called Dagmara names' I don’t know exactly what was said,” she said. “This incident occurred only a few days before Dagmara passed away.”

She said Dagmara had been subjected to racist insults in the past but added that she believed her daughter’s problems went wider. Dagmara’s boyfriend, Lewis Simpson, told the inquest that he thought she had been affected by racist comments, saying: “I think it got to her a little bit.”

The alarm was raised when Dagmara failed to turn up for a lesson. A postmortem found she died as a result of hanging.

Ewelina Przybysz told the inquest Dagmara had spoken to her about problems she was having at school. 'She told me she would have comments such as ‘stupid Pole’. Comments were made towards another Polish child and Dagmara would always try to stand up to them. She commented she did not like it when someone was nasty behind her back. She often talked about problems and she was often hurt when people said unpleasant things.'

The inquest also heard about an incident in a PE lesson that left Dagmara very upset the day before she died.

She fell out with pupils during a rounders game and needed medical treatment after striking a wall in frustration. Her mother said: 'She punched a wall so she could get away from these girls and the school.'

Przybysz also mentioned a post her daughter made on the social network site Ask.fm: “She wrote on Ask.fm in answer to a question about what problems she had at school. Dagmara wrote ‘racism’.”

Lewis Simpson told the inquest: 'When I saw her on Monday, she was agitated at what happened in PE. She said: ‘What would you do if I killed myself? I did not take it seriously, as I thought was just worked up by hurting her hand.'

A school friend, who cannot be named for reasons, also told the inquest Dagmara had been targeted by racist bullies. She said: 'I used to sit next to her in class. She told me when year 10 [aged 14-15] girls said she ‘did not belong here’. I told her to report this.'

Dagmara’s father, Jedrzej Przybysz, said that on the morning of her death he received a phone call from his daughter. 'She was upset and crying and did not want to tell me the reason, Later on, she said she had problems at school that she said I would not understand. I told her to go to school and on return we would have a serious conversation about this problem.'

Przybysz said his daughter had made many friends at primary school since coming to the UK in February 2009 but had not settled at secondary school and asked to move.

Dagmara’s uncle, Tomasz Dobek, took her to hospital after she hurt her hand in the PE lesson.

He told the inquest: “We saw two girls on the pavement and Dagmara said: ‘Uncle, can you run them over.’ She told me she had hurt her hand while punching the wall as some girls had laughed at her because she could not play the game properly.'

that is pretty much an empty threat designed to keep the kids who follow the education routines in line and avoid them creating conflicts that are harder for the schools to deal with

parents can get involved and force schools to take action but it requires a significant commitment to action on their part

or kids can simply take matters into their own hands with the understanding their parents support them

It's also dumb anyway.

She's a 16 year old girl with potentially 1 other also female polish friend.

6 boys come up and call her a Dumb Pole **** Slut who doesn't belong.

And your advice is make a fist and deck one in the chin?

Good luck with that.

Even if it's one other girl and she punches her, then what happens? As stated suspensions or expelled hurting her education. And now you have a less or unedcated person who is violent. Doesn't end well.

Hell responding to bullies period with "Why didn't the victim just punch them!?" reflects a horrible attitude in the first place IMO.

I mean s***... Even not fighting back can have consequences if the bullies are really out to get you.

I was hospitalized multiple times, but the people doing it always got off scott free because they had 8-10 witnesses say that I threw the first punch, despite never even hitting them. I was attacked with a variety of weapons from being stabbed with freshly sharpened pencils to baseball bats.

And I always told the teachers and principal who did it when I could, but it was my word against 8-10 other students, so the school suspended me longer because "I started it".

The only time I didn't get in trouble for "starting it" was when the kid didn't realize a teacher was watching and grabbed me by the throat, slammed me against the wall, and started punching me in the side. I still got suspended because of the "zero tolerance for fighting" policy. <_<

You know damn well that schools don't do s*** and parents can't do s***.

A person can only take so much before they break. You are acting like they should become doormats to these bullies.

As a person who was bullied in school, you want to know what worked? Standing up for yourself. Bullies like to pick the lowest hanging fruit afterall.

I remember getting into a fight with a guy that was trying to bully me, I guess he thought I was afraid of him or reluctant to defend myself because everyone else in school was scared of him. This went on for about a week until he tried his luck in gym and I beat the s*** out of him.

But yea what a lot of peeps babbling on about how "you gotta stand up for yourself" don't realize is that there's no way this petite girl was gonna stand up to a group of guys. Only way she was gonna get left alone was if the bullies got actual punishment or if she got relocated to another school. Some situations are just unsalvagable by your own hands. You couldn't. You fight back and you get into trouble

    Worth it.

It's rarely worth getting 2 weeks suspension and having your GPA suffer for it

Fighting back is always admirable but people need to stop acting like it lacks consequences

Suspended for 2 weeks or harassed for 4 years.

As explained already throughout this topic, 'standing up for yourself' doesn't always 'end' harassment

It's admirable but it doesn't guarantee ideal results and that's the reality that a lot of you are ignoring

But isn't it worth it to try, even once? What if you've already tried "just ignoring them" and "reporting them to the teacher" 50 times each? Will you not fight back because that might not work either?

Homophobic slurs, especially coming from a teacher, are unacceptable in a learning environment. If I was in charge his ass would be on the street before he could blink.

Unfortunately, you're not in charge, and most of the people who are in charge aren't as passionate as you.

It may not end it, but it makes the bully look like an even bigger ass when they keep doing it in spite of it. Not standing up is way worse than sitting back and taking it.

in the UK its more politically correct to attack Eastern Europeans,
because they are Europeans and you wont get in as much trouble.

Which is disgusting because the Poles played a significant role in helping UK in BoB.

Happened to me a few times

I was like 11 years old, even younger. I'd get beaten up by a bunch of other kids, and then they'd tell the teacher I started it and I was the only one who got detention

Basically, I'd be in detention for getting beaten up

I guess when I was coming up there was more leniency when it came to students defending themselves.

I remember getting into a fight with a guy that was trying to bully me, I guess he thought I was afraid of him or reluctant to defend myself because everyone else in school was scared of him. This went on for about a week until he tried his luck in gym and I beat the s*** out of him.

He got in trouble, I didn't, and the coach actually said that he was "waiting for somebody to kick his ass".

your coach would be fired today if that comment got made public

Eh, not really. I graduated in 2003 and our coaches cursed like sailors, as long as they didn't drop the f-bomb it was ok. It hasn't changed since I've been back to watch sports games.

How is her last name pronounced?

    Pz-yi-bish

Kinda it's hard to explain how to say the rz. Imagine a sound imitating a lawnmower. The secret to improving polish pronunciation is not to emphasise the first sound of a word but the second.

I hate stuff like this. I have two polish kids and am the moment am relocating closer to London for work. There are towns I flat refuse to consider moving to because of the nationalist scumbag groups that reside in them and I feel like I have to make up reasons so I don't scare my wife. People in the UK are generally positive about poles, even if often for stupid reasons, it's just the chav class who need people to blame for why they're still scraping the bottom of the barrel.

I dont understand suicide as a result of bullying. When i had something like this happen in high school i stopped going and from there my parents looked into options so i went to another school.

I just dont understand not exploring all options before you figure suicides the right answer.

A teenager will see less options available than an experienced adult would.

Teens only know what they've been introduced to. If no one more experienced steps in and says "hey, try this instead", the teen will rarely find their own way to that solution in time. It's very human for a young impressionable person to panic while having difficulty escaping torment and consider extremes when they don't know what else to do yet. They are much more emotionally vulnerable than an adult.

Teens who are not are a minority.

I think the worst part about bullying is when in elementary school you had those well meaning but idiotic anti-bullying seminars that were just like "oh no the bullies are sad inside, they're just sad people who are hurting!"

nah. Some people are just pieces of s***, and just want to hurt people cause it's fun. These folks tend to become adults and live normal functioning lives
You're only as sick as your secrets, but the truth shall set you free.
The truth is the truth, so all you can do is live with it.
I feel bad for her but the girl had friends, family, and a boyfriend that she talked to about things and confided in... Most people who commit suicide due to bullying would love to have a good stable home life to discuss things with their family, or have friends, or a bf/gf to talk to, let alone all 3. There was so much opportunity for her to ask for help or for people to notice.

I'm just saying that she had a lot of chances to seek help herself or for the people she had in her life to notice that she needed help, yet neither of those things happened. I'm not saying she did anything wrong or that it was her fault or anything, just that it's really sad that she had so many options and so much potential to get help yet this was still the outcome.
