A "good Samaritan" with a gun killed an active shooter who may have been gearing up for a deadly rampage at a Texas sports bar Wednesday night, police said.

When 48-year-old James Jones walked inside the Zona Caliente Sports Bar, started yelling and then allegedly shot and killed Cesar Perez — a 37-year-old restaurant manager who'd attempted to calm him down — Arlington police said witnesses were afraid they would be next.

In addition to the gun used to kill Perez, police say Jones had another semiautomatic pistol and two knives on him. The serial number on the second gun had been scratched off, and Jones did not have a gun license, police said.

"He definitely had the capacity, if he wanted, to commit further violence and potentially kill other patrons in the business," Arlington Police Lieutenant Chris Cook told NBC News, adding that it did not appear that the shooter knew his victim.

An armed "good Samaritan" — as the Arlington Police labeled him — happened to be eating at the restaurant with his wife. A concealed carry permit holder, he told her to get down on the ground and then shot Jones in the back.

"I don't think the shooter even knew where the rounds were coming from because he started shooting at the front door," Cook said, who described the scene as "chaotic."

Police reviewed video surveillance and pieced together the incident via witness interviews, but it remains unclear how many shots were fired by either individual. Police were looking into Jones' background to see whether he suffered from any mental illnesses and were awaiting test results to find out if he was under the influence.

The man who took down Jones wished to maintain his anonymity, police said, noting that he felt overwhelmed but relieved that he prevented further violence.

"We're thankful that the good 'Samaritan' acted quickly and decisively to end the threat," Cook said. "We never recommend people get involved. That's a personal decision that a citizen has to make."

Use of force and firearms expert Emanuel Kapelsohn told NBC News that, from his understanding, the man who took down the shooter reacted appropriately.

"I think it's to be applauded," he said. "Not everybody in the world ought to own a gun. Not everybody in the world ought to carry a gun. Not everyone in the world ought to engage an armed criminal where innocent people could be potentially injured."

"But this good Samaritan obviously had the ability to do what he did," Kapelsohn added. "Who knows how many people would be dead if he had not acted?"

So a Good Guy with a gun takes down Bad Guy with a gun who killed the Restaurant Manager in front of everybody.

Yup, NRA supporters are often simple minded children who think in black and white.

That why regulations exist. (ewww, gun regulation bad!)

With better controls on gun distribution, etc, the bad guy may have not had the opportunity to illegally acquire one.

I also want "free" gun licenses.

Further I want to work with the pro-gun community to figure out a way to implement policy that curbs criminals without harming our law abiding citizens.

Why would that idiot target a bar in Texas? That is not a soft target and there will always be millions of natural, inherently soft targets for mass shooters to target, hence why this topic is stupid. Unless this is to counter good Samaritans shooting their child in the head accidentally or some such headline posted every millisecond by gun grabbers? One thing is for certain, it cant be a defense for our gun manufactures to continue flooding our country indiscriminately (as is legal per state) with as many firearms as they can feasibly sell an individual for "self defense" per fiscal year. Surely not, TC.

What do rocks and tigers, when compared to guns and criminals have in common, comparatively?

Lol, how does your youtube channel show you're a marine?

That's totally not me taking the video on the C4 Demo range video... nor are all of my other videos with me in it portraying me as a physically fit individual with a military haircut... I mean reasonably intelligent people could make the connection.

No way to tell if it's you or not. Let me guess, because you posted a video "Trapping a Pursuing FW 190" means that you trapped a FW 190, right? I also note it's the only video "of you" in uniform. I also won't contend that some of the videos have you with a short haircut. Physically fit... well, I won't be rude though I'll admit I have high standards of physically fit

    No, I don't identify as a FW190... now a P-38G, maybe.

I'm sure your physical fitness standards contain things like:
    - Hiking with 100+lbs of gear more than 18 miles and executing training/operations afterwards
    - Conducting physically demanding activities with 100+lbs of gear
    - Scoring 295 on USMC PFTs and 300 on CFTs
    - Running 3 miles in less than 19:00 min
    - Running Marathons (26.2mi)

*I'll admit, I'm a runner by trade and build... and favor lean muscle over mass as most of my military physical activities take/took place outside of air conditioned buildings and longer than 1 hour.

While I wouldn't profess to encompass the entire Right/Conservative side within the Gun Control debate, I can say that a large portion (probably a large majority) are people who desire to own firearms (as a constitutionally recognized liberty). A much smaller subsection may be people wanting to cash in on the whims of the former group. I believe one could say that this practice is not unique to gun control.

The question is "at what point do we allow the actions of an incredibly small portion of the population to adversely impose undue restrictions on the larger majority"?

I mean, do we ban all Muslims from entering the United States or impose certain restrictions on them just because a couple hundredths of a percent of their population engages in terrorism?

Do we ban all guns or impose certain restrictions on all gun owners just because a couple hundredths of a percent of their population engages in non-justifiable gun violence?

(Note to SakioStyle, that is how you establish an equivalence argument in inductive logic).

Sold as indiscriminately as is legal per state law. 50 laws for 50 different states make tighter laws in the state next door worthless. Mass firearm dealing without a FFL being legal as long as you never call yourself a dealer or have brick and mortar store or sell more than half your income, Buy 1 get 2 father and daughter sales at basspro, $10 for $10 defense firearm sales at Target (that's actually an exaggeration, to bad for all of us that the rest isn't), Manufactures hijacking gun culture turning most of the politically vocal firearm owners I know into unpaid shills only over the past few decades who sound nothing like their forefathers when it comes to guns.

Are you insinuating that firearms at certain retailers are sold without compliance to FFL regulations?

Or are we talking about private citizen to private citizen sales?

On the latter, I'd be willing to compromise that all firearms sales must be brokered through an FFL entity or an analogous system.

Correct. "private citizen" and "collector" sales. I think it wouldn't be so bad if we just rolled things back to the pre-90s where if you sold more than 3-4 guns a year, hobbyist or not, you need to get a damn FFL. Now you can sell as many as you can fit on a cafeteria table in bum f*** ohio, for people to buy up and move somewhere guns are worth 4 times as much.

I have only two problems with that. First, considering how badly people drive, I do not think a test would be a bad idea. If you don't know how to not point a gun at those around you and basic safety like that, you shouldn't YET own a gun. Second, and much more importantly, registering guns is what will actually decrease gun crime. If your gun is used in a crime, they should track it back to you and if you sold it illegally, you should be prosecuted. Combine that with needing a FFL if you sell more than 2 or 3 guns a year and we are pretty much set

And to whoever made the comparison between guns and Muslims being similar in danger, if Muslims caused incidents at the rate of gun owners, we would have 1000 Muslim terrorist attacks a year in the US alone

Guns are already required to be registered at the FFL level through sales documentation, so no need to duplicate existing legislation.
National Registration is one step away from mass confiscation; no 2A supporting people would agree to that, and I don't agree with that.
You register the people, not the gun. If you need to track a gun back, you go through the current processes of tracking a gun and it still works just fine.

The biggest loop whole isn't the "Gun Show Loophole", which is a label pushed onto the mainstream media by Anti-Gun folks; that's a misnomer, it's the person to person transaction loophole.

All transactions must use a FFL as a intermediary, period, no exceptions.

If you go around the system, you can charge the seller / receiver with a the lowest tier of felony as a punishment, so we need to make it clear to all, use a FFL, period.

As far as testing is concerned we need to teach the licensee about basic safe handling.
Canada has the correct acronym to make it easy to remember:
    Assume every firearm is loaded.
Control the muzzle direction at all times.
Trigger finger off trigger and out of trigger guard.
See that the firearm is unloaded. PROVE it safe.

Drive these basic facts through the people's heads until it becomes second nature.

Shooting is similar, there are some simple basic facts we should be teaching to all folks

Anyways, I've given plenty of thought to a Federal form of legislation to begin with.

We have the "4" weapons safety rules here:

    Treat-Never-Keep-Keep

    1. Treat every weapon as if it were loaded

    2. Never point your weapon at anything you do not intend to shoot.

    3. Keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you are ready to fire.

    4. Keep your weapon on safe until you intend to fire.

Addendum: Know your target and what lies beyond.

*I definitely believe that a reasonable compromise, requiring all private to private firearms purchases to be brokered through an FFL or analogous entity which can perform the necessary checks/safeguards.

You've got my thumbs up for that.

The Canadian "ACTS" acronym is easier for civilians to remember; but it's basically the same as your "Treat-Never-Keep-Keep" acronym.

Yup, NRA supporters are often simple minded children who think in black and white.

That why regulations exist. (ewww, gun regulation bad!)

To cover the middle ground for a more nuanced approach.

Fundamentally, the problem in the United States and the countries it influence is that issues relating to guns are grafted onto the left-right spectrum, to the point where some low-information voters in the United States preferred the neoconservative warmonger over the progressive candidate because she took a more doctrinaire anti-guns approach.

You cannot just put this on the mainstream media. It represents 0% of my views on the gun show loop hole for instance. I get pro-gun posters mixed up here, but are you the one who never went to a typical gun show in the U.S.? I've been to many and of various "shades", i'll just say. What stuck the "gun show" sticker on to this is the heavy visual of unlicensed dealers with inventories exactly as large as the FFL dealers right next to each other.

And I'll add to this that if anything the media shows gun shows in a misleadingly positive light more than anything, because the cameras are drawn towards the large annual ones where dealing without a FFL is allowed, but FFL booths will represent 80% of the sellers and background checks are encouraged, sometimes even required (although loosely enforced, naturally), by the show itself if you rent a booth without a FFL. The ones they have as often as the loop hole allows (you can not feasibly keep a gun show running 24/7 in counties all over the nation with just psuedo "collector hobbyist", just so ya' know), can be quite shady. People regularly walk out with dozens of cheap firearms sold by people desperate to sell them without hardly any worry of any serious repercussions at all. So, yeah, I'm going to stick to calling the loop hole the "gun show" loop hole for now.

Exactly, but I feel it's important for both sides to know that this happened relatively recently in U.S. history and the manufacturers intentionally hijacked gun culture in order to make it happen. The threat of anti-gun legislation actually sells guns for them and an over-abundance of firearms in circulation is what's indirectly the most responsible for the negative connotations in the U.S. to begin with.

      -I was talking nationally, state-to-state.

-My point on the loop hole getting "gun show" stuck to it still stands. You're talking about the future you want, I'm talking about now. I was critizing you blaming the media for it.

-You're confusing cause and effect I believe. With politicians aside, no matter how wrong we feel anti-gun people are, whether it's your girlfriend or grandfather, they typically come from a position of complete and utter honesty. On the other hand, even my close gun owning friends and family are afraid to admit publicly that their primary reason for owning a gun is and always has been since childhood, "uh they're badass, duh" but publicly (well, on social media) they're on the defense 24/7 and lie that it's all about self-defense. For me it's the primary reason, for them it's more of a perk. They'll just straight up lie as easily as they breath on that though, publicly. I try to keep this out of gun conversations because of how instigating and unproductive it is to say, but there it is. Sorry to blow the whistle. Many people want to ban because they're scary looking, many people want to buy because their scary looking. I say we just except that as fact, quit trying to make manufacturers happy, and find a way to move on from that some how if we're gonna find solutions like this topic has been throwing out.
