Once again, troll topic, clearly, but if I approach it with an open perspective, I actually have tuppence to add. "Positive discrimination" is something that's been floating around for the past near-decade, but only really gone into overdrive in the past five. I remember it well when working for a larger AAA studio (maybe not the one you think) and we went through a phase where the studio only ever seemed to hire minorities or women. Now, I've no problem with either of these types of people, but it started to get a bit suspect. When we had studio photographs, the photographer would order all the women to stand at the front. Some of the female developers argued that it was "great" - more women in games! Well, it SOUNDS great, sure, but when everyone's on this mad mission to hire only women or minorities, what does that make you, to be hired at that time? Are you hired because of your SKILL, or because you were convenient to tick a box with? If I had been in that predicament, it'd put me in a horrible state of anxiety. Was I chosen because I'm good enough or not? Did I stop another, far more talented individual from getting the job because of the colour of my skin or what's between my legs? And of course... would my fellow employees think less of me just because I was hired during this covert-but-quite-obvious "diversity drive"? Would they shun me, demonise me, or even create an even MORE tribal setup in the studio (with girls sitting with girls, boys sitting with boys, etc). I remember when our studio head was appointed, and she said - and I'm not paraphrasing this - "I'm fed up of it being a middle-aged white man's job. We've got enough of those." She paused for a chuckle, but, of course, the majority of us were white men, and found it pretty insulting. Some people have this "we want reparations!" mentality that means "equality" doesn't actually mean "equality" or "equity" but instead means "we want to rubberband the situation and get MORE than you as reparations for all those years we had no representation!" - which can only lead to another rubberbanding situation further down the line. Equality is just that - equality. If I hire someone, it's because they're best for the job. If they all happen to be men, or women, or T-rexes - so be it. There will be no agenda.
Though, rather hilariously, our company ended up being a disabled Scot (me), a woman, and a French man. So we've ticked some boxes already. Snort.

The problem with the second part is that there's rarely a best person for the job. Usually there's several equally qualified candidates. Positive discrimination isn't discrimination against white men. Its a realisation that society excluded those from various backgrounds from participating in the workforce and politics. The idea isn't just to take any ethnic minority persons of the street and employ them, but to shine a spotlight on those who are qualified and actively take them into positions they may have been overlooked for or were unaware they could fill. White men aren't done a disservice by this, it's literally correcting hundreds of years of discrimination that they indirectly have benefitted from. What's wrong with making workplaces representative of the societies they serve?

Understandable, but as I say oh-so-frequently on here, if people tell me one thing, but I've only ever seen another, I tend to value my own eyes first and foremost. By no means is it demonising or devaluing your information or stance, just... at least anecdotally, that's a few times now I've worked in a AAA game development role and I've watched a "positive discrimination" drive occurring. Of course I won't go so far as to go into too many details here, but during the hiring process, one of my friends, now an ex-colleague, was (and still is) in a senior role and spoke about how he felt sad for (X hirer) because he "had to" turn down the best candidate for the job. And I saw the portfolios - I can attest to this, the technical ability of the "losing" party was superior. But, the following week, we welcomed on eight or nine new members of the team - all but two were female (and those that were male were black), and one of them was trans. Now, look, I am a keen advocate for diversity here, but given that we're in the UK and the applicants usually skew around about 70-80% male, that has to have been an EXCEEDINGLY unusual hiring period, if we're going to say that "positive discrimination" is not a real thing. It makes it harder to have diversity in the long-run. Instead of dilution/diversification of the staff pool in an organic way, it's instead undermining not only the hiring process, but also the people that may have been hired for a handy checkbox and neat photograph opportunity to put on the next newsletter. Nobody wants to be hired because of their sex or race, but as my own wife says, "even I worried about it. Everyone made a big deal about me being a girl developer, kept asking me to write in-house articles, trying to put me on the website etc. - was I hired because I was the best for the job, or was I just really useful to the company for other purposes?"
