- Is it called England, Britain or the UK?
You need to be more specific than that.
England: the bits that aren't Wales or Scotland, and possibly also Cornwall Britain: the island that's England, Wales, Scotland, and Cornwall UK: Britain and Northern Ireland, plus the Faulklands and some other territories nobody remembers. |

england = country. you are english if you are born here
britain is formed of three countries: england, scotland and wales. you are 'british' if you're born in any of those countries UK is formed of four countries: england, scotland, wales and northern ireland. the UK is a sovereign nation, e.g. our passports say that we are from the UK regardless of individual country of birth. so UK supersedes all of the above |

People from Northern Ireland are generally called British too, even if they technically aren't. Colloquially, British is used to mean "from the UK", even if, again, that's not strictly true.
And yeah, Ireland is completely separate from the rest of the UK (including NI). That's why Brexit is such a big deal for Ireland and NI. It opens a huge can of worms. See the Good Friday Agreement. Also, for trade, keeping things the same is a terrible deal for Ireland (since basically, you could drive goods from NI to Ireland and ship them to the EU tariff free, despite not being in the EU any more). Parappa09 posted... yeah but they don't like being called british, they prefer scottish >.> I don't really care either way to be honest. I use them both pretty much interchangeably without even thinking about it. pinky0926 posted... but I get triggered if someone calls me English :P Haha, true. |

What do people from England call themselves and where they live? Either English or British, and most of them live in London. The rest live north of London in various cities, hamlets and towns and have strange accents.

The UK is comprised of England which itself is part of Britain? I had always thought the UK was just a nickname for England and the people were just called British. |

Are the Scottish looked upon as the hillbillies of Europe ? No. But Brits (particular English) are know as the worst tourists of Europe. We're the a******s who think culture means sitting on a beach in spain in a football jersey with a pint of carling. Scots are by and large actually quite cultured and most of them tend to leave Scotland.

So when I vacation in Leicester next month, I can say i'm in England and the people around me are English? Yes. You should walk up to every English person you see and proudly announce that even though you are an American, you are willing to forgive them for their past transgressions against our people in the days of the colonies. They will be impressed by your diplomacy.

Its not really a country as that term is commonly used. Generally people think of a country as an independent, sovereign entity and none of the constituent countries of the UK are that.KhanofKhans, KhanJohnson, Saloonist, BasileosRuvan22 posted...Does the Republic of Ireland have any special standings with the rest of the UK?
