- Today I learned that there was a Roman Emperor who may have been transgender
Elagabalus, Roman Emperor from 218 to 222. He was only 18 when he was assassinated. He married a man (and several women).
He was described as having been "delighted to be called the mistress, the wife, the queen of Hierocles" and was reported to have offered vast sums of money to any physician who could equip him with female genitalia Also, he apparently would wear wigs and prostituted himself in the imperial palace |

It's tragic he was assassinated. Even in the classical period the "bury your queer people trope" was in full swing.

Caligula appointed his horse to the senate. It was a consulship, not a senate position, and it's highly debatable whether it happened at all. The story was written by men who lived decades after Caligula and hated him, and it wasn't beyond Roman historians at the time to fabricate things to make their opponents look bad. On the off-chance that Caligula did actually do that, he likely would have done it to humiliate dignitaries, not because he was insane. |

Actually, he (going to use that pronoun because it was never confirmed that he is transgendered) did get paid He would collect money from his patrons and give himself airs over his gains; he would also dispute with his associates in this shameful occupation, claiming that he had more lovers than they and took in more money. |

We don't really know what he would want though. I feel like its safer to use the birth pronouns in this case |

According to the Wikipedia article as well as a couple others, Elagabalus' sexual activities did not make the Romans very happy. Between his sexual preferences and prostituting himself, he was was pretty hated. Plus his religious ideology upset a lot of people |

If so like, would it even be legal? Human transmutation and all that. Or wait, what about their automail tech? I wonder if they can make automail penises and vaginas.

We never see it being used to treat major injuries as far as I remember. |

It really isn't safer though, considering the details REEK of signs she was trans The details easily could have been altered. Throughout Roman history, historians have slandered the people they didn't like. Details change. For instance, Elagabalus wasn't called Elagabalus until after his death |
