Gee, that's a lot of weight for a 15 yo.

This is why people should have someone with them when doing heavy weight training.

220 pounds? Is he insane?

I would make some snarky comment about that kid being ripped, but I think it would be in poor taste.

So...damn, that sucks. Stupid, obviously. Always have a spotter. But still sad. :-/

As other people have pointed out , there is reason people suggest having a spotter when doing things like that.

That's not heavy but he should have had a spotter. I never lifted without a spotter when I was young.

Glad that his organs will be donated.

No.

Just roll of shame.

The only people that die from benching are the toolbags that try to lift too much weight and either crush their chests or drop the bar on their necks.

Even when going for 1RM's the weight should always be manageable to handle.

I'm in favour of solid lifting cages in the absence of a spotter.

Those are great
Don't try anything you've never tried before without being spotted. It's no an insane amount he was trying but like I said, know your limits.

RIP.

Even as a teenager I wouldn’t attempt a weight I wasn’t comfortable with alone. I usually don’t go within 20 pounds of my max without a spotter. Sometimes you’re just not feeling it. What was this kid thinking?

If benching alone, you should have a power rack and/or only collar one side so you can dump the weight if things go bad. Poor kid.

I read about this yesterday, but from a different source. Supposedly he was using a smith machine, so the roll of shame would be impossible. They do have safeties on smith machines, but he most likely didn't set them up.

Shame tbh. If you are going to try a new weight on bench, get a spotter.

Jeez

safeties on the smith machine are so easy to use as well

That's really not an insane amount or anything, I was benching that at a little older than him, but... always with a spotter, though, because it certainly wasn't easy. Shame, that's a sad way to go. I was dumb enough to do some lifting without a spotter (lesser weight, though) and obviously here I am typing this, but I did have some scary moments a few times.

no one spotted his ass?
That just seems like a really careless and preventable death
There were plenty of guys on my HS football team who could bench that much at 15, so the weight is not extreme. The problem was that the kid did not have a spotter and probably didn't know proper technique.

FWIW, I've benched alone many times and gotten "stuck," with bench weights as high as 275 lbs. There is a technique to roll the bar off you relatively safely if that happens. Everyone should know how to do this if they're benching alone.
