never went to LUE before it closed (actually, the only non-game board I used in the early days was WoT). never saw the signup. I think it happened while my internet access was basically non-existent.

I have been to LUE back when it was open to the public. it wasn't really that different from here. it was just another board. I didn't even know about the drama cause I left the site for a few years and when I came back it was all over and the place was locked down. so whenever i think of LUE, it's weird. I never quite understood what was the big deal about that place or why it was locked down. I guess they underwent some weird cultural metamorphosis while I was gone cause it was a normal board back in the day

I used to have an account that was signed up to LUE when they did away with general access. I got banned for posting a LUEshi in a topic on the board that was about posting ASCII art. No warning, or karma loss with post deleted. My account was never delinquent before that. Just outright banned with me posting LUEshi as the only offense.
That was when I came to realize just how utterly fucking stupid and fucked up the mods on this site really are. They just arbitrarily enforces when they feel like it, how they feel like it, and there's fuck all you can do about it.

I forgot to sign up with this account somehow. Never did make it back to LUE..
It was a fun time. The Internet was, essentially, a brand new thing gaining popularity and evolving. There was no Facebook or Reddit, Instagram, Snapchat, etc.
GameFAQs was in its prime for what it was, and so were the boards.
One thing I'd like to mention if anyone else remembers---we had a lot of voice recorders and people singing. I remember one song played with a guitar was uploaded that went something like...
"What's that?! Is it a yellow strip? It's a moderated message! You better check it, you gotta check it, before you lose your precious Karma, your precious Karma... before you lose your precious.. Karma..."
Could be hidden away on one of my hard drives somewhere, but I don't know. A restricted message board that was locked in 2004. Only a few old posters, like myself, can still access it. You had to have signed up for it before the lock down.

LUE was the first non game board I visited once I realized those boards existed. Lurked for a long time but stopped before it became so infamous.
