as a Canadian I NEVER shopped at Toys R Us...

As a kid it was always Zellers and then Wal-mart as I got older..

For electronics I always shopped at Future Shop and then Best Buy...

Now I buy everything off of amazon. It's just so f'in convenient and I've never had a huge issue or problem with their services.

Three cheers for Amazon and Jeff Bezos! Toys "R" Us was awesome, I'll always have fond memories of it, but Amazon is just better.

Surprised they stayed open as long as they did. Company had HUGE overhead with that massive store and unlike Walmart or Target they were literally just selling one subsection of that store.

I feel Walmart is a way bigger problem than Amazon for Toys R Us. Parents are already going to Walmart, so picking up toys there from one of five or six full aisles is almost like shopping at Toys R Us without driving there

Plus I feel like because of smartphones and video games kids and parents are less likely to want plastic clutter junk to fill their house that will just be thrown out after a few months. My mother used to buy me stuff from Toys R Us. We'd play with it, it would get old and we'd throw it out. Not really practical anyway.
I googled "Mark A" but couldn't find anything. A college friend? The first in a list? The possibilities are endless.

No surprise really. Their prices were outrageous. Obviously a company that was incapable of controlling costs. It's sad to see.
Yes, you can say ASS!

Not surprised, I don't know of many kids who even care about toys anymore.

Walmart or Gamestop covers all of the gaming needs.

Honestly, I'm shocked they didnt close sooner.

And to the smartass who had to throw in a Trump comment, you're not clever. It has nothing to do with Trump.

KB Toys is gone too. There's actually no toy stores left after this.

Ironically Gamestop is becoming a "toy store" because it's probably the next to shut down.

think they'll liquidate their inventories? Could be a good way to get games for cheap.

They shouldnt have marked up/overcharged for everything and people may have gone there more. Tbh i dont know how a store of that size that only sells toys covered their overhead. Why would i shop there when amazon is cheaper, gets it to my door in a maximum of two days, and has the best customer service ive ever seen?

You just answered your own question. The markup wasn't a result of greed, it was a necessary facet of the business model.

I mean even with the mark up i dont know how they stayed open so long. They havemt been an optimal choice for toys for more than a decade
Babies r us already closed, didnt it?
No reason for Toys R Us to exist. It’s much more convenient and cheaper to get toys at Walmart/Target/etc. Amazon has the biggest selection and best pricing, obviously, but you can’t hold something in your hands before buying it.

TRU was flailing long before Amazon’s global dominance.

They were poorly managed and unlike others, see Best Buy, weren’t skilled enough to recover.
[NO BARKLEY NO PEACE]
I once volunteered at a homeless shelter. The people there broke out in song, singing the TRU jingle. It was moving and sad because it represented how nostalgia over childhood can bring joy even in dire situations. TRU played a major role in that for so many people.

This. Someone decided to buy toysrus on a loan. Then they had to pay that loan but couldn't. So toysrus was forced to close.

I must have gone to TRU once a week when I was a kid, not even to buy anything most of the time just to walk around looking at everything.

Same

One thing TRU didn’t do, which I feel it should have done, was let kids play with toys. Have display areas for kids to try stuff. Yeah it would be germ infested but it would also encourage kids to want to go just to look around. And if they play with something cool you know they’ll want it.

The sad thing is, this closure is because kids don’t play with toys anymore.

Ugh, I remember those 'Big Toy Books' that used to show up around after Thanksgiving and just browsing through it day in and out.

Yeah, the magic ain't there, nor do you really see much of any people taking kids there or buying anything unless it's near Christmas season.

I looked at the video. That definitely was a risky and... downright infuriating practice of what happened with the company.

Also like another poster said, other companies manage to salvage and save themselves and are still afloat.Sad day all around.

...And it's only matter of time before Sears joins em, too.

Seriously. Obviously mega-retailers like Wal-Mart and Amazon did a lot of damage, but really, the new "toy store" is wherever tablets are sold.

I read an article a few days ago about how TRU was the one place innovative toy companies could get their product to market. Target and Walmart don't have enough shelf space, and Amazon is not set up to market new products--people go there looking for something specific. But TRU had the shelf space to allow new companies to try out their wares. Some recent "hot sellers" benefited from this model.

So anyone who support small businesses/start-ups/independent designers should be mourning the loss of TRU. Target and Walmart just aren't the same.

Ah, found the article:

Not really. They charged MSRP and often had good sales.

They def dont charge msrp on everything. When amiibos were all the rage and in super high demand they sold at two bucks over msrp. Now amiibos are easy to find and are cheap as fuck lol

IDK if Sears will go out of business any time soon unless they really fuck up. Their business is multifaceted. They have their own share of the auto industry and also sell payment plans for maintenance on home appliances. It would be hard to see them going away when they are that diversified, aside from the fact that much of their auto service is terrible.

Toys R Us is just toys. I assumed it was gone years ago because I haven't seen one in a long time. KB Toys died with the mark crash in 09.

How could blockbuster video adapt to the changing times? Their entire business model was predicated on renting out tapes. They could've done like a Redbox, but those are going away soon as well. Pretty much netflix is the be-all end-all and any other DVD purchases are just niche buys for people that need a physical copy.

Changing times, but stores haven’t changed. It is not the fault of any other business, rather it’s 100% the fault of the upper echelons of the company. Adapt or die.
AP3Brain 47 minutes ago#50
Not really surprising. Toys can be found elsewhere and electronics are more popular with kids nowadays which can be found at any retail store. A large retail store focused on kids is kind of pointless in this day and age.
