The whole show was just propaganda for the royal family to make themselves look good no doubt to further some political aim.

That whole acted segment with the woman acting all happy and saying everyone is welcome in Saudi Arabia made me cringe.

Biggest load of crock of a show. You only need to look at the stadium set out to realise how non progressive the country is. It’s a shame that the E sold out for them.

It's taking baby steps but the baby is doing 720 backflips seveal metres back. They're letting women drive yet they're still second class citizens and probably will always will be within that country.

Saudi Arabia is so progressive. Women can vote now. They can get government services without the consent of their guardian. They can drive and have jobs. They can have non-combat jobs in the military. They can even attend a live sporting event when accompanied by a male guardian. That's some real progress.

It's easy to be progressive when they were so low on the progressive totem pole to begin with. It's like the lazy worker at work, who doesn't really do anything, and the one time they do something, they get a lot of praise when really they should've been doing that to begin with.

The Saudi Authority sent out a statement apologizing to the fans in attendance because during the PPV, WWE aired the music video of all the wrestlers singing in a studio to push the upcoming PPVs. They said the video was “indecent” because it showed the women wrestlers in it and they stated that they will never change their beliefs regarding that. So all this talk of WWE doing this show to “try to change their culture” is a bunch of BS.

Now watch WWE go and issue an apology for airing the video.

I also have been reading reports that homosexuals can be put to death in Saudi. How progressive!

Well, grab your time machine, go back to the 70's and fix everything, then?
What? You don't have a time machine?
That means we have to chart things by the direction they're heading in today! Oh no!

What does denigrating Saudi Arabia's CURRENT progress achieve? It's not as if people aren't aware that they still have a long way to go. Sane people just don't expect them to start today and arrive yesterday.

What these guys can’t understand is how nobody likes that situation and we’re not defending it either. We’re just opening our minds to the chance that things will get better. If things were changed overnight that would be great, but it ain’t happening and we can’t just force them to do it either (too bad right). Anyways it isn’t easy, but hopefully it isn’t impossible.

We just went through the dictionary. The word means nothing here in the literal sense.

No this is a red herring. Go look that up to find out why it applies here.

I’ve talked to someone who had something they were going through. When they shared that with me that alone was progress because they no longer kept that to themselves. Was it perfect? No, there was a lot of work to be done. The important thing is this person doesn’t deal with that anymore and it took a lot of baby steps and trusting the right people.

Okay, yes, I see where the problem is.

You're using 'progressive' as a buzzword, like 'progressive liberal politics'. Other people are using 'progressive' as a word, as in 'moving from one state to another'. So, no, Saudi Arabia is not 'progressive', like say, Norway is progressive, but they are progressive as in, they are improving from what they have previously been.

no that’s not my problem. That’s yours.

First of all that’s bullshit in the same way that “I’m calling that homosexual man a f** because he smells like cigarettes!” Is. You know what the word means

And by he literal definition you’re pretending to use everything is progressive. Everything goes from one state to another. That means nothing.

Go look up the word already.

Obviously I wouldn’t call him a good person. Also this person I’m talking about wasn’t harming anyone else. Torturing wife in basement sounds like a call the police kind of thing and it’s clearly wrong. If this made up male we are talking about confessed that to me by no means does it excuse his crime but if he realized how wrong he was and that is the reason he made that step, yes that was progress to become a better human being. He would have to finish that progress wherever the judge puts him though like other criminals that realize the error of their ways. He’d also do so w/o his wife obviously.

As for my friend, everything she went through and every step she took I was proud of her. Even if she fell back I was there to remind her how far along she’s come and not to stop now. I’m proud of her and I wouldn’t take anything away from her because people have changed the way they interpret the word progressive.

If you’re talking about someone who wasn’t harming anyone else why would you apply to a situation where the country is commiting immense harm to its own people as well as others and hasn’t really let up on that only granted them small concessions in the wake of it. They aren’t “struggling through some things”

If you want to be “proud” of a country oppressing it’s people that’s on you. People are going to call you out and I’m sure you’ll have some non sequiturs to regurgitate about the dictionary.

    Seriously?

So many of us have already stated we don’t agree with them. I pretty much got 6 daughters, you think I wanna take any of them there? Hell no! I’ve never debated the practices we hear about or how much catching up they have to do on how to treat other people. I’m just using the words progress and progressive for what they have originally meant for the longest time. That’s all I’m debating. I can’t think of one person posting in this topic that would be like, “nah I’m cool w/ their executions of people who are different.” Progress =/= perfect or even justification.

If that were the case would we not be outraged they let women drive let alone go outside?

At this point you couldn't be more transparent that you are actively ignoring the point.

I'm pleased a country is oppressing it's people less, I consider that a good thing. It would be nice if people weren't oppressed at all, but would be nice cuts no ice, and somewhere between dystopia and utopia there's a thing called 'improving'.

You’re the one talking about being proud to sosmeone while they struggle through their issues when talking about a giveenrnent oppressing it’s people.

Great. By the dictionary definition it’s as progressive as a the expansion of the universe(that may not even be happening anymore). Great job. You’ve established something that has nothing to do with what is being talked about to justify this. Good job.

When wwe calls a company progressive on tv they arent saying it transitions from one state to another.

It’s inmoral to give a pats on the back and ass kissing to a country oppressing it’s people. Especially when it’s obviously because they’re being given money.

The policy you could argue is progressive the country is not.

You don’t get smoke blown up your ass for continuing to do bad things.

Oppressing less is even subjective. You wouldn’t pat me on the back for giving my prisoners snickers bars. At least I hope not. Maybe you would.

But enough of this. The lines have been drawn and they aren’t changing

You think there is something positive about acknowledging and praising even small progress since it encourages more and it shows support

I think there’s something immoral corrosive harmful and just downright insulting about speaking of a country guilty of backwards oppression using the same terms those seeking to go beyond the current standards(in theory, that’s a whole different subject). I think it enables stagnation rather than encouraging progress. I think it corrodes our own moral standards and cheapens these concepts to meaningless fluff. I think it makes light of the harm still being done.

I think it’s really sickening when corporate assholes spew this kind of morally dishonest claptrap just because they’re begging given money.

I think bullshit is bad for you.

I’m gonna leave it at that.

Two steps backward, and one step forward is actually called stagnation there Einstein.

You're conflating their blatant propaganda social reforms with actual progress. Tell me how them being complicit (alongside their political allies the U.S. and the U.K.) in human rights abuses in Yemen is a sign that they're actually genuine in their supposed desire for progress? They don't give a shit about it, it's the same reason you don't hear about the genocide going on in Yemen, because it wouldn't make the government look too favorable once everybody knows they've been bankrolling money by selling arms and tech directly to Saudi-backed militia groups and mercenaries who then use those to indiscriminately kill innocent civilians.

Not to mention women can't even drive yet, they could totally veto that bill and put the kibbosh on it before it happens.
