There are lots of CDNs on the street who need food and shelter. I don't get it. Is it because the photo ops with the homeless aren't good enough? No awards or international recognition for the political elite from helping our citizens in need?

For $80m they could have built a small town. Actually, there is one in BC near Price Rupert, with all amenities and even 1980's appliances, that they could buy whole for less than that.

Whenever there is a post about bringing refugees to Canada there are comments like "what about our homeless?" or "what about our veterans?" or "what about natives living in squalor?". It's not "either/or" ....Here are the facts Canada:
Our government spends $4 billion per annum to fight homelessness.
Our government spends $3.64 Billion per annum on veteran affairs.
Our government spends $8.4 Billion per annum on indigenous affairs.
Our government is spending $1.2 billion over 6 years ($200 million per annum) on Syrian refugees.....See More

I can't believe we are not allowing refugees access to on-demand movies and snack bar! This is violation of human rights. Increase our taxes so they can watch newly release movies and enjoy some goodies from the hotel fridge. While at it, give them memberships to local gyms, it's pretty important for them to be healthy. Just charge it to us tax payers, what's another 30 million on top of what's already budgeted?

David Braganza, of course you haven't seen terrorism yet. Majority of refugees here to date are privately sponsored or the ones previously vetted under Harper. Justin is just taking credit. Maybe 1 or 2 might get in or perhaps 50. Some may even have their beliefs radicalized here. The point is you, me, the government just does not know. To take in the numbers they are with the economy in the mess it is in and no plan is ridiculous. These people were in camps, safe from the violence of Syria, yet the government has to rush it through to meet an artificial deadline promised in an election platform. The government started out asking for people to take refugees in, then wanted to put them on bases, now they are asking for hotel rooms. Sound planned to you? They are flying by the seat of their pants and we will be paying a LONG time for this SNAFU,

And here I am, a working Canadian 40 hours a week minimum wage job (can`t find a better full time one since I`m also a full time student) , I go to university, nobody is helping me do anything. It would be nice to get some help from the government but all they are doing is charging me 6k plus on student loan interest and taking all my income tax returns - I guess that money is going to help pay for these hotels. I have to go to the food bank while these guys are getting paid to come here and get room service and free clothes and housing, probably also pay for their language training.. And they wonder why people are upset... There was even a time when I was living alone and couldn't afford my rent anymore even though I was working full time at that min wage job so got evicted after 1 month late- so I kept going to uni but I slept in Tim Hortons. Where the hell was all this hospitality for me back then? It's because I wasn't a good photo op for the politicians. Why the hell do I even pay taxes in this country? I can pretty much also confidently say these guys aren't staying at a Super 8, probably an expensive hotel downtown somewhere. Waste of money.

"These terrorists"? I dare you ignorant buffoon to prove all these refugees are terrorists. I don't agree with the way this is being handled and how we are ignoring our problems at home but at no point do I see any signs of terrorism within the refugees that have arrived so far. Yes charity begins at home but charity is now expected in this country ain't it? I dare say even our homeless have it somewhat better that the situations most of these refugees have encountered. Muslims? Guess you forgot to mention all the fanatics that come from other religions as well. David C. Braganza Just a reminder, David. Airport security was introduced, let's see, about 40 years ago. It now costs $7.- Billion a year. This does not include lost productive hours for every passenger! It was introduced because of the shennanigans of the Shriners, wasn't it?

What a display of incompetence. Refugees were coming anyway at a rate that could be absorbed without spending millions of public money on hotels. But the Liberals have to show they are not breaking this election promise, (because they broke all of the others already) at any cost to the public.

The "We're baaaaaaack Crowd" does it again. At our expense. $15 for breakfast every single day they stay in a hotel? Since when does and Canadian family of four, Mom Dad and two kids, drop $60 on the table for breakfast. What kid eats a $15 breakfast each and every day unless you are the child of one of our Senators? Only an Ottawa Liberal mandarin thinks it takes $15 per person for breakfast. There are thousands of Canadian families who would be much better off claiming refugee status.

I am on disability, by my estimation, if I elimate my transportation costs for dr's appts (though I would then lose the additional $80 I get for transportation)ok, so after $500 for rent, $300 for meds not covered, $80 for transportation, I am left with around $250 per month to eat. An average month has 30 days, that would leave me with $8.33 per day to eat. Not per meal, per day. SMH

Kinda inflammatory article. But that is media these days. Can't blame them. They need to stay relevant. I say kudos to the government for getting this "problem solved' in an efficient and effective way. For example, why would a hotel bid on this type of business unless it met their own profit and safety needs? Seems totally reasonable to me.

Why on earth rush things? Where is the urgency apart from trying to fulfill an ill advised campain promise? It will result in higher costs and confusion. I would be happy if this was one promise broken by this new government. Karl Svab ·
Peter Loto ??? did you had ever seen what that muslims can do to a nice apartment building in a couple of months ? Canadians on the welfare system are right now being kicked out of these hotels and being forced to live on the streets so new immigrants can have a place to stay. Ok, so I am on disability. I just did some quick math. We are alloted $450 per month for housing, I pay $500, my father has allowed me to move back home because even in Brantford, there is no where you can live, other than a single ROOM, for $450 per month. So $500 per month housing, $300 per month on meds that aren't covered. I have 2 ESA dogs, who I would be dead without, but I Won't even calculate any of their costs in here. After rent and meds, I am left with just over $300 per month for food, transportation, and anything else. Of that $300, part is the $80 I receive for transportation. So...See More

If our government would have planned to have REAL refugees instead of meeting quotas and seeking media attention, all this money would have help Canadians as well as refugees. All this money could have been used to build low cost housing, restaurants, schools, clinics,, win win situation, refugees gets low cost housing, schools build to fit their needs, clinics with islamic language doctors, restaurants and food chains with their foods reguirements, etc.. instead of housing them in hotels and military housing and demanding for the Canadians to help these refugees. Get out your check books everyone, because we are going to be paying and paying more and more $$$$ for everything, while refugees get items that many Canadians do not enjoy because they cannot afford it. Trudeau's picture was with Lebanon refugees for all the pictures. They looked grateful. What about the others.

Sounds like the cost of bringing groups of refugees over here which we definitely should be doing. Sounds ridiculous to ask the hotels to be providing the crappy food for the refugees. My only concern here is how much extra is this going to cost us for rushing in refugees with an arbitrary number by an arbitrary date. If we weren't in such a rush to make the Liberals look good would this bill be cut in half? How about the transportation costs as you look to book airliners to bring in the refugees are you paying a premium for short notice etc. In the end helping the Syrians is laudable. Rushing them in for political purposes is crass politicing that very well might double or triple the bill.
Jeff Wilkinson ·
Wonder if Prime Minister Trudeau will let me give up my geared to income apartment in Kirkland Lake for a Syrian. Then maybe he'd let me move into one of his Toronto hotel rooms with food and lodging paid for by our government. Looks to me as if the Syrians got the better end of the deal. But that's the thing with the Trudeau government - it would much prefer looking after the Syrians, before looking after any of its own people.

If you are in need you should take what is offered, without expectation or demand. If you expect others to cater to your needs and personal preferences you are clearly no longer in need. I don't have an issue with our country accepting refugees and carefully resettling them - many Canadians were displaced peoples and were welcomed to our country. However, Canada did not change its ways or try to cater to their needs. That is where we are seeing a huge difference. If people wish to be welcomed to Canada they must come with no expectations - that is apparently not the case with many of these current refugees. Also, if the government provides an "estimate" we all know how that turns out.

No movie rentals ?? So now they won't let the poor things watch porn ?? Justine and the crew should be tried at Hague for that !!! Also, Halal is not "beneficial" but absolutely mandatory. It's a matter of respect

this money should come directly out of stephen harpers bank account and pensions as well as trudeaus bank account and wages for conspiring with benjamin netanyahu and partaking in the bombing of iraq and syria. This is one of the reasons we have a refugee crisis. All these so called leaders should also be charged with war crimes.

The Salvation Army is said to be one of the most effective organizations in North America. Why not turn the entire project over to them? They don't allow themselves to be seen as rescuers and victims to be saved. In fact, they expect those they help to help themselves. The Army knows how to turn one dollar into three whereas, the government knows how to turn three into one.
Melanie Greenham
I have a plan for the refugees, All males between the ages of 18 to 50 will immediately be inducted into the military of their new country and sent to basic training, after basic training, they will be loaded into aircrafts and flown back to their home country, and upon arrival given weapons and ammo and told to reclaim their country. Once they have accomplished that, we will send their wives and children back to them at no cost. They will be paid the same as our soldiers, while fighting for their country and their dependants will receive the same benefits as our soldiers dependants. If they are not willing to do this then they and their families can find another country to take them, We should not have to send our military to fight for their country if they are not willing to fight for their own

Insanity. This is the most irresponsible thing I recall any government in Canada ever doing - which makes it that much more essential for the the lefties to undertake. A defining issue fo rthem. desperate for billion dollar Syrians. their moral health and identity depends on it now. Angels from Syria.

This is what happens whenchampagne socialists get involved in charity. If they were providing Xmas dinner, they would have organic fresh turkeys. Nothing but the best or their reputations might suffer.
Can you imagine the Salvation Army spending even a tiny fraction of $80M to help this many people? They would ensure the people were fed, watered and housed, and have money to spare.

Is it just me or does anyone else think that $61.00/day for a child for food might be a bit high? There is no distinction made,,just per person. I guess this is how a millionaire thinks. SO FRUSTRATING !!!!!

We could have built homes and hospitals for them "over there" (and they wouldn't have had to feel displaced) for that kind of money. Next...take the check book to Viet Nam ....
Pat Manolis
they were already safely housed over there...they are not coming directly from Syria, but from safe countries...so why the big rush?...so trudeau can get lots of selfies and photo-ops?
Jim Carlton ·
Pat Manolis Bingo! There is definitely an agenda at play here.
Patrick Duffy
Jim Carlton, are you for real? It's not a terribly bright idea to build homes and hospitals in a war zone.
Carrie Liberte ·
I'm very concerned that the Trudeau Government isn't providing the large Syrian refugee families with two nannies. It's not like they're rich or something ...

Untill (end of) March there are 105 days. $80M for 300 rooms over 105 days makes a hotel room around $2,500 per night. What kind of a hotel is that?
Pat Manolis
it will cost a lot more then that...and that's just for 5 star hotel rooms...they will be there longer then 1 night because in a rush to bring them here, the liberals have no idea where to put them
Kurt Austin
Pat Manolis,
They were talking about putting them in Peterson AFB. Don't know if they are giving them all blueprints and secret codes as well.

Agree, looks like the come for a vacation instead of fleeing a war zone country, which from what I see on tripadvisor, tourism is still good!

because turdeau made these promises and must keep them...no matter how expensive and immpossible they are

Oh, goody....
Since the Canadian governments and companies are tripping over themselves to throw money and aid at these migrants, I guess unemployed, homless and veteran Canadians should be asking the GCC countries and businesses for help.

Most of you sound like rotten racist Trump supporters. Canada is doing what it should be doing. What the rest of the world should be doing. Canada voted and it is clear what the majority of Canadians want.
