Is it true tht some chefs literally use Liquid Nitrogen in their food, like the article suggests? I guess tiny quantities that will evaporte away before the guest can eat the food?
s0nicfan 1 week ago#9
t was made popular by celebrity chefs, including Heston Blumenthal, and is completely harmless as a gas.

But if the nitrogen has not burned away fully, as a liquid it has the power to freeze objects in a matter of seconds. Touching the liquid can give you severe cryogenic, or cold, burns.

So it was a shitty bartender, according to the article. Like if you tried to eat pufferfish from someone who doesn't know what they're doing. That sucks.

It can be used safely to flash-freeze stuff inserted into a container of it, but to actually put it into a container of food seems reckless and stupid.

It's used when someone needs to freeze something really fast. Like "oh shit, we're out of ice cream and a customer wants ice cream and no time to make more" people use liquid nitrogen.

It's also used for things like making quick chocolate molds and such.

As for how she was able to drink it? it's a little unintuitive, but your body is so hot, the liquid nitrogen evaporates before touching your skin, however, that cools down the air around your skin slightly and the process keeps repeating until it actually touches your skin at which point you're fucked.

here is a video of a guy sticking his bare hand into liquid nitrogen (DO NOT ATTEMPT)

It's a common "wow" technique used in cocktail bars and fancy restaurants. It's really basic, everything just smokes a lot which looks impressive but otherwise adds nothing to the food and drink.

I've never heard of someone being injured by it before though, and this is really fucking horrible.

I couldn't remember if it was well past what McDonald's heat for coffee should have been or if it was an unsecured lid. I read on reddit a while back where people were talking about how the case gets used as an example of frivolous when it was actually a good suit.

That said it's used as an example of frivolous and that is was what I was trying to get across. I suppose I could have said do you support someone sueing Starbucks because there coffee was hot and they burned their tongue.

And no I've never made this and it seems crazy to me that it's legal. That said if she was told to wait and didn't and it is legal I don't see why it would be on the bar.

From what the article is saying it sounds like it's safe when it stops giving off the smoke. If handed this and told to wait thats what I would wait for.

I mean at least to me I think taking the shot on fire seems more likely. Like I might have tried if I could have done it without burning my upper lip. Kind of the same thought as putting out a lighter with your finger. Doesn't burn because it goes out right away.

I'm certainly not gonna take something that's steaming off especially after a warning.

I feel bad for the girl and think this sounds ridiculous and shouldn't be legal but given that it's legal and the warning is given I can't see this as the bars fault.

Im assuming it's safe after the vapors are gone and that's what she was supposed to wait for. That said upon rereading i think I might have changed my mind. Doesn't sound like a real warning was given. My opinion would depend on exactly what was said.

After the McDonald's case, every fast food has "Caution! Hot" all around their cups. Does this now count as good enough warning if you burn yourself from now on? What needs to be made clear is if the bartender gave a good enough warning about how long to wait (until the vapors dissipate, perhaps?) before drinking, or failed to do so.
There is no "would of", "should of" or "could of".

Because if Literally everyone uses something one way it can convey meaning that isn't exactly the definition.

If most people equate that case with frivolous law suits and sueing because coffee is hot then using it as an example of coffee being hot and burning yourself with it is a fine example.

Because if Literally everyone uses something one way it can convey meaning that isn't exactly the definition.

If most people equate that case with frivolous law suits and sueing because coffee is hot then using it as an example of coffee being hot and burning yourself with it is a fine example.

those people use it as an example because they never actually looked into the case and are ignorant about the whole thing

they think she got a minor burn, sued and won millions of dollars

which is completely not what happened

so no, it doesn't work that way sorry

The bar was stupid for putting it in a shot, aka a beverage that is intended to be drank quickly. Of course she didn't wait long enough

OK so you admit people think that she receives minor wounds and sued and won millions.

Given that people believe that regardless of what actually happened then they would understand my the message I was trying to convey. The same as my use of the world literally above.

Bar MAKES girl drink(s) liquid nitrogen

    They MADE her drink it?

    Kind of.

When made properly, the drink doesn't contain liquid nitrogen. When made improperly, it does.

She didn't ask for liquid nitrogen...

They didn't make her drink it. They handed her a drink that she decided to take.

You can tell someone you don't want a drink.

so because people are misinformed we should use it in a misinformed way too?

    what a bad mindset

but in reality I think you are just trying to save face for not knowing the coffee literally melted off her skin and she had to have a skin graft

Why? The purpose of language is to convey meaning. If it does so its communicating effectively.

Do you correct people that use literally wrong? Language is about what communication and if someone understands what's being said the particulars of a case are unimportant.

Hell you understood the point and decided to try and discredit it by attacking something that had nothing to do with what was being discussed.

And no Im not trying to save face. I've already said I couldn't remember the particulars of the case and changed my position on the original purpose of this topic. I have no problems admitting when I'm wrong or changing my opinions with more information.

The coffee was kept well above safe temperatures. You can't just pass out boiling water to people like that.

    I do

that is why you cannot use a case that is LITERALLY not frivolous

to say "guh ha another frivolous case like that one! that is ...not actually...frivolous"

and other people doing so are doing so in great ignorance perpetuating a lie, so why do you feel they shouldn't be corrected?

That may be, but doesn't change the fact that not everyone knows what liquid nitrogen is, or how damaging it can be.

this makes me very very angry

That they gave her a free drink for her birthday, told her to wait for the nitrogen to finish and she took it early.

I read the article and didn't see that anywhere. The bartender told her she'd get a bit gassy from the drink, but didn't seem to say anything that would suggest that the drink was potentially dangerous.

"I was just told to wait a couple of seconds for the vapours to evaporate."

Im assuming it's safe after the vapors are gone and that's what she was supposed to wait for. That said upon rereading i think I might have changed my mind. Doesn't sound like a real warning was given. My opinion would depend on exactly what was said.

Even if she was told to wait certain time, i would still be on her side. People don't go to bars and stay sober while spending quality time there. They shouldn't serve dangerous drinks to people who are drunk, drinks that could even kill them.

Maybe someone thinks the worst thing that could happen is that they feel gassy as bartender said, or the drink would just taste different.

Maybe if they told the customer that you might fucking DIE drinking this, and make them sign some papers, then i would somewhat accept that.

Don't demand the government make it illegal when it's just that bartender being shit at his job. At most push for something like a fugu-license.
