So what is the difference between what this numb-skull did and what several Syrians and others did in Cologne? Both that person in Vancouver and those people in Cologne are criminals and the person in Vancouver is not representative of Canadians and the people in Cologne are not representative if Syrians.
The vast majority of refugees are good people in unfortunate circumstances who will become good and productive Canadians, and the vast majority of Canadians will do whatever... » more

Probably he reads real news sites like the BBC and Deutsche Welle where it was widely reported from official sources that 18 of the 31 apprehended were refugees and all most all were from Arab countries. Now you can say that just because they were apprehended does not mean they did it, but then just because that guy sprayed refugees does not mean he did it because they were refugees.

@apropos It is not a myth and I would go so far as to say humans are essentially kind and caring - it is human nature - but there are some exceptions among us and there are exceptional circumstances when kind caring people can be unkind and regret being so.

This is the first I am reading about
the New Years rape attacks in Germany...
That is so horrible; I read this paper almost everyday!
Why isnt that story being brought forward only now in comments...
Thats not right
If thats true I think a lot if people would feel so manipulated by the media and this government, ...speechless

@WhatHappened2Canada? It was in every news thread I have read for the past week....not sure when CBC published it. This smells of a targeted attack. Whoever did this should be charges with a hate crime. Yes, FairnessForAll, very embarrassing for Vancouver, and Canadians in general. Makes one wonder,

Whats really embarrassing is that for some of you this will be a bigger story and more important than the ISIS inspired murders of last year or the police officer that was shot this week in the states or the mass shooting a couple weeks back in California. Yes this is wrong, but some perspective would be helpful, a lack of this perspective is breeding more dislike of refugees that don't deserve it.

You are right to use the word "embarrassing". That is exactly how I feel.
Maybe rather than simply taking in refugees we could start an exchange program. We could bring decent people here and send our own idiots somewhere else.

What rape attacks? Who was raped and by whom? We really have little information regarding alleged rape but we do know there was a lot of seemingly organised theft with confusion and distraction sewn by 'groping'. Integration is a two way street.
Attacking innocent people because they're immigrants? Disgusting.
All this does is play into the idea that we're on different sides. The types of ideas that ISIS are trying to promote because that's the only way they'll survive.

You know nothing of Islamic State. The problem we have is they are being integrated into their own communities and not assimilated into our culture.
Their mid-East communities will increase in size, eventually pushing out Canadians of Western culture. We see this everywhere.
Their daughters will be pressured into covering up for life, never to expose their flesh - such as an arm or a leg... and we will be looked upon as 'filthy, raw meat, impure...'.

A "growing majority", eh? So, is that a majority (i.e.: more than 50% of the poplulation) that is growing even larger as you suggest, or are you hoping that your and your xenophobic circle of friends will grow into a majority? Too funny how you just make stuff up.

While cowardly, it points out an active issue that BOTH sides need to work on. At least it wasn't bullets or a bomb, so reserved kudos for Canada.
But Muslims need to own that trepidation regarding them didn't just fall out of a clear blue sky. The mix of culture/religion from their area of the world has a dubious distinction of producing world-class terror-mongers -- with them popping up even out of "practicing and observant" families. (Look at France).

@ttrewolla Actually, 1000 men participated in the attacks in Cologne, but only 30 have been identified as suspects as yet, about 18 of which were asylum seekers from Syria. Most of the rest were from other Middle Eastern countries.
And it was not only in Cologne: Reports of similar coordinated attacks on women at city squares and train stations on New Year’s Eve have come in from Frankfurt, Hamburg, Weil am Rhein, Dusseldorf, Nuremburg, Ansbach, and Stuttgart (all in Germany), as well as... » more

@Marksist No, there have been more than 150 of reported cases of sexual assault in Cologne and other cities on NYE, including at least 3 reported rapes. The events were covered up by police and media; the Cologne police chief was fired over it and the German media apologised for not reporting it fully. You need to read before denigrating other posters.

@andyny -- The difference between the refugees in Cologne and the refugees here is that the Cologne ones are a miscellaneous lot -- part of the mob that washed over uncontrolled European borders without any substantial screening. The ones in Vancouver have been thoroughly vetted and in many cases reliably sponsored. There is, at least, a basic difference in how we should look at this, rather than painting everyone with the same brush.

"We are embarrassed. "
Simple response CBC, well within your guidelines.
"We are embarrassed."
Are we embarrassed by this as well.
Where was CBC when a handful of Jews were across the street from a Palestinian rally in Calgary holding Israel flags in support, when some of the close to a thousand Palestinian supporters crossed the street and attacked the Jews sending 4-5 to the hospital including one woman who was punched to the ground?

@Robert-Mac What proof do you have that these people will become good productive people? As productive as the 1000 refugees attacking innocent women in Germany? Do a little research, similar attacks happened all over Europe as well. I do not condone what this 1 moron did in Vancouver but I definitely understand why people do not trust or want these refugees based on what Europe is experiencing.

We need to stop people from having to become refugees. We need to protect innocent people in their home countries by establishing safe areas, by providing humanitarian assistance so they may eventually go back to their homes and everyday lives. The refugee crisis will be one that western societies will eventually not be able to cope with. Countries will eventually become more and more nationalist and you will see a lot worse things than what this idiot did. Help people at home.

It is still possible this was a hoax to create sympathy/news/positive towards this issue.

@blargs : Those criminal acts have been fully covered in the media. The cowardly pepper-spraying of innocent refugees in Vancouver is a criminal incident and needs to be reported. The criminal pepper-sprayer needs to be arrested and punished. Hopefully, a photo of him was taken at the crime scene and can be used in evidence.

The refugees in Cologne have not been convicted of any crime. It is a racist rumour that it was refugees. Their are people from North African heritage that have lived in Germany for generations.
There is NO evidence that it was Syrian refugees behind the German attacks.

What you think Muslim men did.
From MacLean's magazine 2 days ago--
" German authorities have said there’s no evidence that any of the refugees who recently arrived in Germany were among the attackers. Cologne is an ethnically diverse city, and it’s possible the attackers have been in Germany for years or were born there."

I expect I grew up in a similar environment to you but would never consider excusing this sort of behaviour with "we are all products of our environment." We make our own choices and the person on the bike made an indefensibly poor one.

@millsm I agree and find even CBC News reports are contradictory ---but fall far too often on making people fearful of Muslims or immigrants ---both are shown to be suspicious. The one question they never forget to ask, 'How did that make you feel?' . Pandering and not what respectable journalism is all about, ---emotively sensationalism---.

@FairnessForAll - Why is it okay to attack a man? You seem to believe that men deserve to be attacked more than women and children do. I hate this line of thinking that is so pervasive in Canada. No one should be attacked, regardless of whether they are a man, woman or child.
