This is deplorable. I hope that somehow the refugees effected will come to understand that the majority of Canadians wish them no harm.
For the rest of us, we cannot remain silent. Violence and hatred are reported by the media, but kindness rarely is. Kind, compassionate, caring, loving, patient, loyal, friendly - these are words that describe the majority of Canadians. May these words put into action be what most refugees experience.

My parents are immigrants to Canada for over 45 years. They both left there country for war torn reasons and a better life. However they never had any financial support arriving here and worked hard for everything they have. My father came to Canada with 10 dollars in his pocket and worked without financial assistance. The frustration is that I walk the city streets of Toronto to see so many struggling Canadians who need financial help, yet we are accepting thousands of refugees. Help... » more

This is not a good situation but this country is divided when it comes to welcoming Syrian refugees. Whoever did this may feel resentment and may have mental health issues. I find it ironic how the left was defending the shooter of the soldier in Ottawa saying he had mental health issues and didn't get the help he needed but they want the pepper spray individual jailed.

@Joan MacDonald not one person said the Ottawa shooter shouldn't be incarcerated. What most sane Canadians did believe was that he had mental health issues, not the terrorist label Harper pinned on him once he crawled out of the closet.

I take it you've never been around this stuff... This is some seriously obnoxious stuff... especially the Bear Spray. Even the most tiny little droplet can burn your eye, nose or tongue for hours.
A fine mist drifting in the air will get into people's eyes, noses and mouth from several yards away and while it is unlikely anyone took the full brunt of it, it had to be plenty uncomfortable for them.
The best outcome here would be that dude on bicycle managed to spray himself... » more

Bear spray can stop a massive grizzly in full attack several feet away, given the right conditions. Spraying this many passive, unsuspecting humans is entirely possible.
I wouldn't mind having my name registered next time I buy bear spray, if it would prevent criminals from purchasing it.

Brandon Saad the 23-year-old from Pittsburgh, Pa., who plays left wing for the Columbus Blue Jackets is of Syrian extraction. So is Steve Jobs, Jerry Seinfeld, Paul Anka and Paula Abdul.

Immigrant then and immigrant now are worlds apart. Lot of water under the bridge since any of their crowd came here as immigrants... There is no comparison to be made here... sorry... Iran revolution, Saudi Arabia... look at those things and then compare... The world has changed drastically since then... no comparison... mute point now....

@Aaron Joel Jon Kiselbach - Exactly ... Canada is nation made up of various ethnic groups; many of whom faced nativism at its worst. That being said one of the feature of the Canadian identity is that most Canadians have heard stories of how ancestors were treated upon arrival and have internalized the concept that one judges individuals on their actions not on the ravings of fear mongering media, politicos, etc ....

@Aaron Joel Jon Kiselbach And so are most of the people fighting in Syria. It never was a question of genes, but of what speed can vastly different cultures be melted into one pot. Did you take basic chemistry? Read a bit about mixing sulfuric acid and water. It can be done, provided you follow a certain procedure and not just pour one onto the other liberally.

@greatguy You don't understand his point?
Here's Canadian history for you: every new group that arrived was subjected to bigotry by the ones "already here". The Irish, the Jews, the Italians, the Chinese, the Japanese, the east Asians ... it's a never-ending list

@Aaron Joel Jon Kiselbach What does the group you mentioned who all moved to the good all USA for the almighty dollar got to do with this story ? The list of people in the entertainment business who moved to the USA is endless , yet they are the first to state how great Canada is ? Hypocrites, all.

@mrtfan We are are we and who said so? It would be refreshing if some of you Pollyanna liberal types would wise up and accept the fact that Canadians are a motley lot and we are no better or worse than anyone else.Every debauched act, known to Humankind, have been perpetrated by some people within Canada at certain times so I have trouble with certain people vainly trying to present Canadians as some sort of elevated humanity almost without sin or malice.Only naive and stupid Americans Think that Canadians are ah composed and nice people and that assumption on their part says more about them than it does of us.« less

Before everyone jumps to conclusions, how do you know that it wasn't a Shiite attacking Sunni's? You just don't know yet so to jump to the conclusion it was someone else is wrong until the facts are known.. there is a lot of baggage with Muslims and it's not always caused by the West... ISIS is killing more Muslims than any other race on the planet.

@Newsjunkie About 3/4 of Syrians are Sunni, the other 25% are Shiite or other religions. So presuming your theory is true, the person has about a 20-25% chance of hitting a target he would not want. Heh, still better than the American bombing.
Further, ISIS is about establishing a caliphate in traditional Muslim countries (first). Thus, Muslims who don't follow their doctrine, who ISIS list as enemies, are more "available" or easily struck against. Just like any ethnicity is more likely to target other members of the same ethnicity for crime (in the US, 87% of caucasian crime victims were targeted by fellow caucasians. African-americans was 93%). If they were waging war in China, the numbers would be different.
Nevertheless, strawman argument. These are people FLEEING the situation there. So any efforts to target them because of the actions of ISIS is not only horrible but also misplaced.« less

The association they are attending is for Sunnah only .. what is that about, they come to Canada, and only have organizations for one Muslim and not the other, is that not discrimination.
Hope the perp is caught soon, sooner than the one who set fire to the Mosque, who did that, was he caught. or was that a candle that caught fire.

Society is changing for the worse, the elderly getting beaten and robbed, people getting knifed at the Calgary stampede and other places, random beatings everywhere and swarmings are becoming common place.
People aren't hungry anymore like they were in the 30s, 40s, and 50s. Back then everyone was just trying to get by and had no time for mischief like this.
I read a news item in an old newspaper from the 1950s about a Dairy being broken into in the 1950s. The thieves stole several dozen eggs, and 12 quarts of milk. Valuable stuff!« less

Can you imagine the mass hiring in Germany right now and the caliber of police they will get. I do not know how our police and military get through it, and we wonder why so many of them are screwed up.
Trudeau needs to help the vets who are screwed up from their time over there, never mind the refugees.
