Basically there's no company, it's a algorithm, and users hold the power to reward content. The first "blockchain" was a cryptocurrency called Bitcoin, which inspired other platforms and applications. There is a blogsite that rewards content creators called Steemit, using Steem cryptocurrency to reward content creators and curators. Now there's a video-sharing version on the the Steem blockchain to reward video creators and even commentators.

While this is an awesome idea and I support it, I know this will never go anywhere. Google has a monopoly no one will ever compete with ever.

Even if it helps 50 video creators and thousands of their fans it serves a purpose. But I disagree, in 10 years or so people will be mostly on blockchain platforms where more power is given to the users.

Most people don't give a s*** about who's got the "power" online. My wife just wants to watch videos of a cat with it's head stuck in a slipper.
I'll think of a sig later.

It's all about word of mouth. In the past, Myspace was the place where all the good stuff was. We all see how that ended up.

Except that MySpace always sucked, we just literally didn't have any other options.

YouTube doesn't suck. It's a little annoying from time to time, but for 99% of users it's perfectly fine.

YouTube is pretty damn bad, even to just casual users. You think people detesting the monthly unnecessary design changes or the other various user-unfriendly UI are something only limited to hardcore and dedicated users? You think the constant takedowns of random videos and channels are something that doesn't bother casuals? YouTube is in the same position as MySpace with everyone having no other better options.

Not to mention the complete lack of communication with content creators and the automatic demonetization of their videos without warning or reason. Well, there usually IS a reason but they never f***ing tell them why so they can maybe avoid it in the future.
Tah-rah-rah-boom-dee-aaay, did you get yours todaaay? I got mine yesterdaaay, that's why I walk this way.

A casual user types "www.youtube.com" into their browser, clicks in the "Search" box at the top of the site, types what they want, and hits enter. They are then given what they want. It's extremely simple and straightforward for a casual user. If you like someone, you hit the subscribe button and then a direct link to their channel is placed on the left side of the website and is visible at all times. It doesn't get much simpler to use for a casual user.

Yes, there's a lot of bulls*** behind the scenes for content creators. But the casual viewer of YouTube who has never uploaded a video or tried to monetize their creations never has to interact with much of anything. And the basic functions barely change from one new update to the next. The search bar is still at the top of the screen and will always be there, the list of your subscriptions is still on the left-hand sidebar and will always be there, etc.
How long until the first murder is broadcast or it get's set up as the video sharing equivalent of the now defunct Silk Road, drug sharing website and the feds go ballistic?

If anyone is dumb enough to publicly broadcast evidence, it just makes the cops' jobs that much easier.

Just like how people are dumb enough to Facebook livestream murders and other crimes, it just makes the cops' jobs a lot easier.

If they can get away with posting porn, copyrighted movies, anime and other things without getting in trouble then it could be a wonderful alternative but corporate greed is a powerful foe, I don't think they can slay that beast
I got nothing
It's really hard to dethrone a powerhouse. I'd like to see something combat youtube, but it's going to one hell of a fight just to get your name out.

Yeah, but it hasn't stopped people from doing it on Facebook.

youtube is not and has never been profitable so how is some random ass website planning to improve on that formula and be sustainable?
Darmik 18 hours ago#43
If there's no content control it's not going to be as big as YouTube from that alone.

Besides what's stopping companies suing the users of the site uploading illegal material instead?
Kind Regards,

It's not profitable except for a select few that got really lucky.

I think he means for Google. The service itself doesn't generate a profit for them. It costs them a lot of money, and they don't make it back. He's wondering how this system will pay for itself. The servers and bandwidth will become extremely expensive relatively quickly, he reckons.
I use Google... A lot.... >______>
