If the US imposes sanctions on China, could that further restrict the Switch?

For those that don't know, the Switch like most game consoles and consumer electronics, are made in Foxconn, which is in Taiwan, which the US Goverment considers part of the People's Republic of China since Nixon met with Mao

Point is, if US decides to cut relations with China and South Korea, it will greatly impede on consumer electronics like the Switch, and could only end up hurting the console even more

I guess one silver lining will be that if it does happen, the rumor of artificial scarcity will finally be quelled

The US cutting off trade with China would smash the US economy into flinders.

When Trump wrote that he was probably unaware how North Korea's economy actually works, in much the same way that he is largely unaware how anything at all actually works.

Taiwan isn't a part of China

the US considers Taiwan to be part of PRC, as do most countries, outside of the Vatican, Lesotho, Burkina Faso and some Latin American and Polynesian countries, which still consider Taiwan to be part of the ROC

AFAIK no country considers Taiwan to be independent from China, despite some acting as if that was the case

South Korea is a Major US ally and is why we have so many problems with korea in the first place.
Secondly, trade with China is a big part of our economy. The fallout would be huge.

There would be a few months of not buying any plastic crap........ until India starts making our plastic crap.

China is a paper Tiger, we can get our stuff made anywhere else - India, Brazil etc and these countries would be more than happy to take that trade and jobs. So what if we pay a few more pennies on manufacturing?!

If we stopped having our crap made in China it would make 100's millions Chinese unemployed overnight - a situation that China does not want to be in due to the inevitable rioting etc.

At the end of the day a rogue vassal state of China is threatening America and her allies, this is more important than computer games. China needs to reign the rogue state in and the only way they will muster the energy to do that is by the US pressuring them, threatening to make 100 million Chinese people unemployed overnight is a good way of doing this, especially when China know full well that we can very easily have our crap made somewhere else and it will be barely more expensive for us.

Being nice and paying extortion fees to N Korea and China got us in this mess in the first place. Lets actually threaten to hit China where it hurts for once.

He is unaware of how anything works and yet he is a world famous billionaire who single handed took on and destroyed the Democratic and Republican parties, entire media establishment and Hollywood to become the most powerful man on Earth. But that was all a fluke... yea right.

HAHA! Weakness personified. "Lets get pushed around by China and a brutal dictator because we have plastic crap made in China". Maybe this is proving that to be reliant on one nation is to put yourself in their pocket to the point where they can have you threatened with destruction by their vassal state and there is nothing you can do about it because ' the US economy would be smashed to cinders"
No wonder N Korea routinely threaten to nuke you Americans if that is your attitude toward a country that is the puppet master of the country threatening you.

Yeah, American factories would get a flood of orders. Not exactly a bad problem to have. Anyways, trade with China is like $500 billion a year, which is like 2-3% of the ~$19,000 billion U.S. economy. Trade with China is a massive drain on the U.S. economy moving 100s of billions of dollars out of circulation in the U.S. every year. They buy almost nothing, but sell vast amounts of stuff here. Mainly because whatever we would be competitive with Chinese companies in, they find some way to stop the trade and thus the one way wealth transfer continues(good examples are Chinese restrictions on cars and Hollywood).

Apple executives say that going overseas, at this point, is their only option. One former executive described how the company relied upon a Chinese factory to revamp iPhone manufacturing just weeks before the device was due on shelves. Apple had redesigned the iPhone’s screen at the last minute, forcing an assembly line overhaul. New screens began arriving at the plant near midnight.

A foreman immediately roused 8,000 workers inside the company’s dormitories, according to the executive. Each employee was given a biscuit and a cup of tea, guided to a workstation and within half an hour started a 12-hour shift fitting glass screens into beveled frames. Within 96 hours, the plant was producing over 10,000 iPhones a day.

For years, cellphone makers had avoided using glass because it required precision in cutting and grinding that was extremely difficult to achieve. Apple had already selected an American company, Corning Inc., to manufacture large panes of strengthened glass. But figuring out how to cut those panes into millions of iPhone screens required finding an empty cutting plant, hundreds of pieces of glass to use in experiments and an army of midlevel engineers. It would cost a fortune simply to prepare.

Then a bid for the work arrived from a Chinese factory.

When an Apple team visited, the Chinese plant’s owners were already constructing a new wing. “This is in case you give us the contract,” the manager said, according to a former Apple executive. The Chinese government had agreed to underwrite costs for numerous industries, and those subsidies had trickled down to the glass-cutting factory. It had a warehouse filled with glass samples available to Apple, free of charge. The owners made engineers available at almost no cost. They had built on-site dormitories so employees would be available 24 hours a day.

Another critical advantage for Apple was that China provided engineers at a scale the United States could not match. Apple’s executives had estimated that about 8,700 industrial engineers were needed to oversee and guide the 200,000 assembly-line workers eventually involved in manufacturing iPhones. The company’s analysts had forecast it would take as long as nine months to find that many qualified engineers in the United States.

In China, it took 15 days.

If I'm not mistaken they're building a foxconn plant in the US, so there's that.

One thing to note, the political media likes to frame everything under the sun as the end of the world. As though we're one step away from disaster, but it's rarely the case. They frame issues this way both because disasters sell, and they hope to scare you into supporting something without thinking about any alternatives. It's a method of controlling people.

Especially in economies people react. They change their behavior and life goes on. Even if much of the doomsaying came to pass and electronics doubled or tripled in price even would it really be the end of the world if you had to be more selective in your purchases? Maybe you buy one console and keep it longer instead of buying 5 and getting 10 games a month. Maybe someone figured out a more efficient method of manufacturing out of a sudden need for cheaper products and it maintains the status quo of prices, who knows.

The fact is the US economy survived an invasion, a civil war, a great depression, two world wars and it's still here. Don't let them manipulate you, read more level headed analysis and make up your own mind.

If we didn't have a nuclear war during the Cold War when tensions were much higher and we were dealing with a legitimate threat with an unstable ruler with Russia (which also had more arems back then) then the world isn't going to be brought to its knees with tiny North Korea lol.

The day the earth is destroyed by mankind will be the day that we have already colonized outside the planet.

cuban missile crisis was about as close as it got, only saved by one russian who decided it wasn't a good idea to launch the nukes on cuba to avoid a possible invasion (it was a 3 man team who decided and he was the only one who voted against).

if NK launches a nuke it will start a cascading reaction which will begin nuclear war, and there is no sensible third man to stop kim from going through with it. and while i doubt NK will lead to the end of the world, we've got well over 100 years before we're ever going to seriously colonize any planets; chances are high that some a****** will pop up and kill us all.

Yes, in the long run it works out somehow; but as Keynes noted, in the long run we're all dead.

Nope. You are just buying into the fear mongering. Looking back at history makes you relaize that things can always be much worse. The cold war brought several near misses and nothing happened still. The paranoia back then was much greater than it was today and for good reason.

There will be no cascading reaction from an NK attack. We have our defenses ready and you best believe that the only nation that has anything to lose in this is NK.

Fact of the matter is that China has cheated on trade for a long time and those trucks hauling North Korean ICBMs around were built in China. Time to unwind the relationship. It can be an amicable divorce. The rest of the world has plenty of industrial capacity to fill the void (and cheaper labor if that is all you are after).

Thing is, that was Trump unfairly blaming the KORUS, and the reason Kim is being so diplomatic about it is that the KORUS is something that strongly benefits the Korean deficit, and tossing it out would be a terrible idea for both countries; which is why a straight backout was officially off the table as of yesterday

They do still want to try to strongarm amendments to the KORUS, and unfortunately South Korea will probably have to concede, because the KORUS is a great boon for SK's economy, and they'd probably rather have amendments than to have the whole deal torn up, but unfortunately South Korea's infrastructure becomes destabilized practically overnight if the U.S. and SK stop interacting altogether, so even if the KORUS were to become defunct, it's unlikely to end South Korea's affiliation with the United States

These are all assumptions and carry no more weight than some conflict triggering a nuclear war in 20 years or an asteroid or super volcano killing billions. Science has not always saved us. There's lots of things that still have not had a scientific solution. To say one way or the other is equally foolish.

Of course, likely all of humanity will never go extinct, but society and a large part of the population can easily crumble and has little to do with fear mongering and more to do with statistics. Especially given the 100-200 year window and the nature of humans.

Exactly, which is why I'm talking about the next 100-200 years, not the past. We only got the power to destroy ourselves remotely in the last 70 years. To use that as an outlook for the next 100-200 and make definitive statements isn't logical.

Yeah, American factories would get a flood of orders. Not exactly a bad problem to have.

The infrastructure simply doesn't exist in America.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/22/business/apple-america-and-a-squeezed-middle-class.html?pagewanted=all
Apple executives say that going overseas, at this point, is their only option.

What a load of crap it is that they don't want to TRAIN, or PAY anyone in the US as it would cut into their insane profit margin off their mediocre products.
Only difference is in china they can get entry level work in their companies to get exp where entry level jobs in the US most I seen require 5-10 years exp, a bachelors, masters, and doctorate in almost every field, and pays $12 an hour
