Toys 'R' Us is working to put together a loan to fund its operations in a potential bankruptcy filing that could come before the holiday sales season, according to people familiar with the matter.
The toy merchant's move underscores the deep distress rippling through retailers of all sizes as consumers increasingly shop online at sellers such as Amazon.com Inc or go to discounters such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc .
A spokeswoman for Toys 'R' Us did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The people could not be identified because the bankruptcy plans are not yet public.
The Wall Street Journal earlier reported that the company was considering filing for Chapter 11 protection in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Richmond, Virginia.
There have been more than a dozen significant retail bankruptcies this year, but none for retailers as big as Toys 'R' Us, which has about $5 billion in debt and more than 1,600 stores worldwide.
A loan of several hundred million dollars as part of any possible bankruptcy filing would reassure the chain's vendors it could pay them for the loads of stuffed animals, action figures and dolls it needs to stock its shelves for the holiday season, the people said.
Part of the retailer's current financial woes stem from vendors demanding tighter repayment terms over fears that Toys 'R' Us may file for bankruptcy, the people added. The tighter terms have added to the Wayne, New Jersey-based company's cash crunch, they said.
Toys 'R' Us tapped restructuring attorneys from Kirkland & Ellis LLP, CNBC reported this month.
The retailer had already said it was working with an investment bank to assess options for about $400 million in debt that comes due next year.
Buyout firms KKR & Co LP and Bain Capital LP, together with real estate investment trust Vornado Realty Trust , took Toys 'R' Us private for $6.6 billion in 2005. The deal saddled the company with debt, limiting its ability to revamp its stores and make online shopping easier.Toys 'R' Us opened a store in New York City's Times Square this year to capture more holiday shoppers.

Pretty sure I bought Melee and Wave Race: Blue Storm there when the GameCube first came out. Even as a kid though, we never really went to Toys 'R' Us.

It'd be one of those things that would be tough to see go. What kid doesn't love a store like that?

Kids are glued to screens and rarely play outside after the age of 8.

seems weird. where are people buying toys for their kids from to the point where TRU is going bankrupt?

Yes most kids are being raised on video games, but there is a lot of s*** in there that you can't just buy wherever like bikes, scooters, various crap dolls (like disney princesses, ponies, etc), nerf equipment, legos, remote control s***, and so on. Is all of that also selling badly?

Hell, I really can't remember the last time I was in one. I think 2009-2010.
I miss toy stores around the holidays. Back when they had legit displays out. KB toys and Toys R Us were awesome. As well as the different hobby stores with train sets and all manor of radio controlled toys. Or wanting nothing more than to go to the Toy Store from Home Alone 2.

The last two times I went into TRU were last week because they were the only store nearby to have any of the Metroid amiibo two-pack, and a few years ago when the Tamagotchi Friends came out because TRU was pretty much the only retail store stocking it.

This moreso just makes me think about how I hear kids at least in the US don't really play with toys anymore, just mess around on phones and tablets. And it reminds me that Tamagotchi is f***ing dead in the west which hurts.

Back when I was a kid the Power Rangers morphers were like ten, fifteen bucks. Now they're all like thirty bucks. The aforementioned Tamagotchis experienced a price hike too, the Connection line was about ten to fifteen, while the Friends was like twenty five. The Japanese ones that come out these days are like, fifty bucks, but at least the tech on those has improved over the years.

I used to love going there during the early Pokemon hype to buy cards for $5/pack. It used to be something my dad and I did every Sunday, "what do you say at halftime of the football game, we run to the toy store real quick to get you some cards?".

This is true, and we sure as s*** aren't buying from TRU. My Transformers collection is worth thousands, and maybe 5% of it was purchased from TRU. The problem with a lot of the brick & mortar stores is that prices (and selection) from online markets invariably will always be better. The only advantage may be the instant gratification of buying it then and there (vs waiting for shipping/delivery).

If the bankruptcy filings happen and the chain shuts down, the kid in me will be sad and miss the days of drooling over rows & rows of new NES games without any allowance.

Toys R Us was too far away for me to really visit so when I wanted a game I had to go to Wal-Mart or K-Mart (which was honestly pretty decent back then)

But I remember one time when we were out shopping and my mom took me to Toys R Us for the first time and saw their selection. It was like a whole other world.

I go to Toys R Us embarrassingly regularly on the search for Transformers. I just got into Transformers this year and for some reason online distribution kind of sucks for them? I've been wanting Twintwists for weeks but he's still like ten bucks over MSRP on Amazon. If the new Rodimus has awful distribution too I might just have to eat the cost. I can't find Twintwist at Wal-Mart or Target either though locally. This'll probably drive up the price of Toys R Us exclusives too though like Power Rangers Legacy Items.

Tomorrow will be the most beautiful day of Raymond K. Hessel's life. His breakfast will taste better than any meal you and I have ever tasted.
