No matter how organized you are, you’re bound to run out of milk or diapers in the middle of the night and need to make a quick visit to your neighborhood retailer.

Paul McDonald, who spent 13 years as a product manager at Google, wants to make this corner store a thing of the past. Today, he is launching a new concept called Bodega with his cofounder Ashwath Rajan, another Google veteran. Bodega sets up five-foot-wide pantry boxes filled with non-perishable items you might pick up at a convenience store. An app will allow you to unlock the box and cameras powered with computer vision will register what you’ve picked up, automatically charging your credit card. The entire process happens without a person actually manning the “store.”

Um this was made in Sweden first. Even steal the origin idea of needing things for babies.

*Edit: Oh well...almost the same idea. The Swede made it an unmanned store you had to go to. But with app etc. He got the idea when he needed baby food in the middle of the night.

Amazon is already trying to create an entire food store around the idea of AI and computer vision, where you just grab a cart, take whatever you want, and walk out.

and walk out

and the app takes care of paying!

So if it's for non-perishable items in the middle of the night then why the hell is the story about milk involved?

That's like saying "Run out of OJ at 2 am? Here's a vending machine that dispenses peanut butter for you."

Well they said "no matter how well you plan". Plan better. You should never run out of milk in the middle of the night.
Milk doesn't perish, does it? I just ate a bowl of cereal with some milk that's been sitting in my fridge for a few months.
God bless you

Don't understand why they mention milk when it is perishable.

What a far leap from one thing to another. Don't project your immidiate personal thoughts onto me.

Those are harding working business people and they are getting their livelihood stolen by a silicon valley app.

You're the one assuming that automation is somehow an attempt by white people to avoid interacting with brown people, which honestly is pretty openly racist. What, are they unable to have a livelihood outside of bagging my groceries?

All that matters is convenience. There is no functional difference between going to a robot store and going to a corner store as both require you to get up and travel somewhere. The operating costs would probably be similar, due to needing restockers and technicians. It would probably need to be run out of some central business, so there you've got trucks, workers, warehouses, supply lines, executives, etc, etc.

I don't really see the point

actually, before blockbuster went out of business, it was like $10 to rent

redbox was just $1

anyways, I thought blockbuster died before redbox

netflix was what killed it

I think they were also cheaper

people are never going to embrace a completely employeeless store, and automatic charging of cards is bound to lead to some frustration if customers take an item out and then decide to put it back in or whatnot. there will always need to be a customer service rep and/or a manager for certain situations.

Couple differences:
1. The convenience of redbox is that it saves a trip because you're using it when you're already at another store
2. Redbox sells ONE item, versus a grocery store's giant inventory, which simplifies the process

This sounds great!

I can't count how many times I've needed nomperishable night milk. Now i can fight off ostrichperosis at all hours of the day.

Sure there's limit to scale, but people care more about cost and convenience.

redbox isn't a store, it's a kiosk. i didn't say jack s*** about kiosks.

Blockbuster's demise was the Netflix/Redbox one-two punch. Like Netflix would have eventually killed Blockbuster on its own, especially once Streaming took off, but Blockbuster still had not needing a subscription and same day movie renting to hold Netflix off. Redbox took both those things from Blockbuster at a 4th of the price.

And what arbitrary definition separates a kiosk from what has been described. These are going to be nothing more than a kiosk that you interact with. Paying the overhead of a store defeats the purpose

So has anyone here b****ing about milk, figured out by milk they very likely meant formula?

Did you even read the article? It isn't a robot store. It's a essentially a bigger more varied vending machine, at your home/work/gym/whatever.
