- Toys R Us blames videogames for their bankruptcy
Maybe they shouldn't have abandoned their rewards program.

CEO didn't seem like he was blaming people, he's just saying that lackluster game sales at Toys R Us are responsible for their problems.

Guess Amazon's Prime discount worked? Even though it is s***ty now? More like adults don't really want to walk into a store and have to navigate past 4 aisles worth of toys for 6 year old kids to go shopping for themselves. |

Whenever I was a kid, the price ratio for video games to action figures was around 15:1. Now, its about 3:1. Video games provide entertainment for longer than action figures. Seems legit. ye as a kid I could walk into toysrus and buy a junky toy for a dollar now a junky toy would be like $4 minimum and g.i.joe would be like $5 now posable action figures are $20

NES Classic: never in stock, then discontinued.
NES Classic accessories: plenty in stock, nobody buys them. Switch: Never in stock Switch games: Plenty in stock, except for the game you wanted to buy today. Joycons: Plenty in stock, nobody buys them, much. Amiibos: Never the ones you want, plenty of Animal Crossing amiibos though, next to the Infinity figures. Disney Infinity: Buy-one-get-four. They can't even give the damn things away. Skylanders: Pretty much the same. Lego Dimensions: Ditto, except for that one set you went in there to buy. X1, games: Do "bros" even walk inside a TRU? PS4, games: ditto. |
He really didn't mention that it was games themselves that were at fault, just some of the things involved with the process of games. Hell, Toys R Us carried all sorts of video games when I was a kid. M rated ones, too.

Here's something interesting:
Whereas kids across the West would base the entirety of their Christmas list based upon what they saw in the Toys R Us catalog I wonder if it's a coincidence that retailers tend to go to complete s*** roughly fifteen years after discontinuing the print catalog. Wards, Sears, Radio Shack, and now TRU. Likely also Penney's and Macy's. |

I did just walk in and get the Metroid set last Friday. It's just too bad they're a dollar or two more than anywhere else. Still, the selection has been getting pretty thin though. Unless you want a Pikachu or Luigi, it's pretty much a crapshoot. |

CE has a weird double standard where "random group I identify with was mentioned, but not praised??!!" And they go full screech mode But then when someone else is like "I'm gay and this guy said he hates gays" CE says "stop being so sensitive" So I'm just really confused
I-I really needed this~~

But...
They have a video game department... |
I remember one year (I think 1999) they did a one day blowout of n64 and gameboy pockets (or whatever that small one was). My dad and I got the last n64 for $80 and my sister got a game boy for $40.
Good times. Every other time I've been in there for a video game its a sad sad store.

So I could either save for 7 weeks (feels like forever to a kid) to buy a game or buy that batman action figure I saw on tv and still have a few $ left. I just had a idea that would of been nice to of had back then. Ask my dad for enough to buy a game, then just not give me a allowance until it's all paid back. Damn 20/20 hind sight and past me for not thinking of that. |

Why would I ever physically drive to the store when I can get a cheaper price online and delivered to my house. Video game sales are fine, you have 1% of the f***ing market lol

Seems legit. Indeed. Whenever i peruse the toy aisle at any store nowadays I'm floored by how much dumb plastic robots are. Of course I'm gonna spend $60 for a month of entertainment on a vidya game than $20 on a ninja turtle that I'll get bored with after 20 minutes. |

Gamestop has the same problem on their hands which is every year digital sales are getting higher whereas physical sales of games are going lower. And like Gamestop, TRU can point to "this game sales were down which is why we had a bad quarter" but it ultimately comes down to foot traffic and how do you compete with convenience.
Since the start of the Xbox One/PS4 gen I now own roughly 200 games, 8 of them are physical, which was the complete opposite for me last gen. Trends show year over year more gamers are adopting digital, regardless of that Gamefaqs member screaming "yeah but you don't actual own those games." There is something nice about pre-loading a game and right at midnight I can launch it without having to get in my car and drive to Gamestop for a midnight release. TL;DR digital distribution is the future and all of these execs saw the writing on the wall with music, tv shows, and movies and didn't do anything. So now they are playing catch up.

Late to the thread, but...
Actually... Video games are responsible for the decline in toy sales. This has been a known fact for about a decade now, especially among adult collectors who attend things like the New York Toy Fair. If you go to the toy isle and look at the newest Transformers and ask yourself, "Why do these look like they're made for 6 year olds?" It's because they are. Hasbro has flat out said that they feel like they've lost boys who are 8 years or older to ipads and video games. The toys that they market to 8+ year old kids are becoming increasingly rare. There use to be a great podcast from CollectionDX who perfectly summed up this phenomenon. It went like this, "If you were a kid in the '80s and you wanted to experience the world of Star Wars then you went and bought the action figures and you created your own fantasy world. Now days if kids want to experience the world of Star Wars then they go buy BattleFront. Kids don't have to use plastic action figures to create worlds anymore because they can just go buy a virtual world to play in." And it's true. I've been around kids today who have Star Wars figures and they're treated like Ambioo statues. They're warming the shelf in some Star Wars display. If they want to play Star Wars then they break out the app game, the PS4 shooter, or the PC MMO. They don't dump out the giant box of figures and world build on their carpet, atleast not at the same ages they did 20 years ago. |

KB Toys > Toys R Us I use to go in KB Toys all the time at the mall. It was SO much better than Toys R Us. I bought my classic Robotech SDF-1 at KB Toys. |
Topic title is a bit misleading. The complaint is they aren't selling nearly as many video games as they used to, so sales are down. Not that video games are taking people away from toy sales.

They are blaming their low sales of games.
Why would I do that?Saxon posted...I remember back in the day when they had bins full of Earthbound for SNES on clearance 'cause nobody bought that damn game when it was new.
Now it's 1000 dollar game sealed in the box.
I wish I knew then what I know now and I would have bought every damn one of them for 20 bucks each.
damn bro u must be like 45 years old!Toys R Us got a lot of buisness from me as a kid buying videogames. They shouldnt complainWhoever beats my score I will give them a $10 PSN or Live card:
