Trump mentioned a new coal mine that would produce "clean coal...meaning they're taking out the coal and they're going to clean it"

Trump's irrational support of coal is literally the opposite of a free market approach, which is what the Republican Party is supposedly in favor of when it comes to things like energy. Trump actually just wants to give special attention and privileges to the coal industry, probably because he views "putting the miners back to work" as one of his central campaign goals.
The coal industry is already being crushed by natural gas and renewables. It cannot withstand the free market forces, and that is why Trump is trying to prop it up.

Trump's irrational support of coal is literally the opposite of a free market approach, The free market approach would be nuclear power, which Democrats have halted at every turn. Even though it produces less waste than solar per unit of energy generated and produces no atmospheric waste like coal does, Obama stonewalled any attempt to make nuclear power viable and so now we're stuck with fossil fuels for the forseeable future. Good job.

Clean coal does not mean literally cleaning the coal.

Sativa_Rose posted...Trump's irrational support of coal is literally the opposite of a free market approach, I don't think the solar energy waste thing is true. Most of what I've heard about the waste associated with building solar panels has been grossly exaggerated. The closest thing to a free market in energy in the US right now is actually Texas in my opinion, which does not have any nuclear I don't think. Nuclear has tons of safety regulations and takes forever to actually get built. You might say that is not "free market", but those safety aspects aren't going away any time soon. That's different from a free market when it comes to the actual buying and selling of energy.

Sativa_Rose posted...I don't think the solar energy waste thing is true. This article claims that solar panels become waste and very difficult to recycle, basically, and that they are then burned so that the copper and stuff can be extracted from them. There is no way this is true with modern solar panels, they are worth far too much. Maybe this was true with really s***ty old solar panels, but not your modern crystalline silicon or cadmium telluride panels.

Before I bother responding can you find a less biased source The waste is only created in the production of the panel itself. The panel, once created, doesn't create any waste beyond the s*** you need to do to clean / cool it which is mostly water. Unlike coal, which emits a bunch of poisonous gasses, the waste of the solar panel is liquid/solid and easily contained and disposed of in ways that do not hurt the environment. Yes, the waste is extremely toxic, but it is easily controlled and managed to have 0 impact. The waste products of coal are less toxic, but almost all of it gets into the atmosphere. |
So can we put to bed the idea that covering the wall in solar panels is a good idea, mal?

Wow, this is the first time I'm hearing this about Solar Panels. They are very recyclable, the materials are worth a lot. https://cleantechnica.com/2016/06/21/recycling-old-solar-panels-e-waste-today-gold-mines-tomorrow/ https://electrek.co/2016/06/21/solar-panels-recycling-value/ Another thing you have to understand is that any solar panels that are already at their end of life, say 20+ years old, were made no later than 1997. There was barely any solar power in the world in 1997, and those panels totally sucked compared to today's technology. So it's going to be a while before this even becomes a major issue, because solar only started becoming really huge in the post 2010 era really. Also the electrek article estimates current industry recyclability at 96%. So it's gonna be another 15 years or so before there starts to be large waves of solar panels reaching their end of life.

By less biased I didn't mean a sight that fits your narrative better but isn't as conservative. But Chromatic explained it so it works. First I want to know what you would do to make nuclear more feasible? You realize to even work in one in is a whole deal in itself right? Restrictions exist to prevent another chernobyl (whish is still a threat) and that's not even mentioning the cost to make the plants. Also, just as an aside, if these solar panels are so toxic, what do you do with them when you have nuclear power to provide? I support nuclear power, but it's not something that you can just rush into.

Nuclear has come a long way since then, and even if we look at the worst nuclear disasters in recent memory, Three Mile Island and Fukushima, there's been no measurable damage caused by either. itachi15243 posted... why is it obama's fault that trump (since the campaign) has championed a failed, dying industry?

I was googling online and it was saying that they use coal to make solar panels. What the f*** am I reading, is this real? Some legit sites like the National Geographic were claiming this. Whatever you read is misleading. Making anything in a factory requires electricity, and if the electric grid in that area is at all powered by coal, then you could say that it is "requiring coal" or something. However, that's only because the grid is currently using coal at that moment. You can't manufacture the thing that is going to produce electricity cleanly without using the current sources of electricity to manufacture it, because manufacturing basically inherently requires a lot of electricity. As more solar is put on the grid, energy use in the manufacturing process becomes cleaner. Mal_Fet posted... Sativa_Rose posted...They are very recyclable, the materials are worth a lot.
