I hate "new" words that have been around forever but people hear them for the first time and abuse the s*** out of them.
Like, all the words that have been listed in this topic. |
Gotta love how many of these words originate in black culture and have been around for YEARS, then the mainstream hears them and claim that it's "new".
I remember someone challenging me a few years back that "snapback" was a new word, then I showed them evidence of rappers using the term from at least 10 years prior. |

"Smize" irks me though. Usually im fine with most slang and use it all the time but that one I can never take seriously.

M_Live posted...Why do people get so mad over the word bae? And it's f***ing lazy. You're removing 1 letter from a 4 letter word that was already only 1 syllable. It's like abbreviating dick as dik. Why f***ing bother? It offers nothing.

I don't really like made up gender pronouns. I'm fine with using the pronoun that refers to the opposite biological sex or they/them etc., but not non-words like xe or zhem or squee or whatever. If someone demands made up pronouns like that, I just won't use pronouns at all. I'll just refer to them by name exclusively.Place-holder sig because new phone and old sigs not saved :/3khc posted...Idk why you CE likes to pretend they don't know what slang is. I say pretend because I refuse to believe you are THAT out of touch with with the world, epsspecially living on the internet.
I am that out of touch, personally. I've only been active here for the past few weeks, and board 8 since during election season. Prior to that, for a few years I've only been on small boards where people don't use weird words. The only time I've seen "bae" was on imgur, in pics of text conversations. I've only been active on imgur for like 2 years. Aside from checking local pokemon go groups, I only go on Facebook once or twice a year. I don't do any other social media. I don't knowingly associate with anyone under 20 or so other than nieces, nephew and children of cousins, ranging from newborn to like 11. I just don't really have exposure to these types of slang. If they appear in music these days, that might explain it too, since I rarely listen/pay attention to any music that's come out in the past decade.Place-holder sig because new phone and old sigs not saved :/Cocytus posted...gatorsPENSbucs posted...

They are newer. That's the point. A lot of them are new. Look, I was a high school English teacher for twelve years. I think I know a little about it. BAE is absolutely a newer slang or colloquial term.Cocytus posted...CanuckCowboy posted...

(Just kidding,I use it)Kontal-Kontil posted...When people call things "Extra" like; "That's so extra".
I like extra. I also like phrase "doing the most" because both of them give you this great mental picture of someone taking something way too far and pushing things past the point of seriousness until it loops back into comedy.
"Putting it down" is a vague turn of phrase I used to dislike. Now I think its a useful euphemism for talking about sex that will go right over most people's head. I feel the same way about 'play:' "Do you often play with friends?' or 'How do you like to play?' It's all about context.
Slang I hate: Breeding. Ugh. So gross. It's too much. Some people feel the word "bussy" is way extra. I feel the word "breeding" as in the sexual act goes a step beyond that.https://i.imgtc.com/72JF7CA.jpg (by mark2000)

I get what you're saying, but from your explanation I think your friends likely use "extra" in a different context than mine."I laughed and said, 'Life is easy'. This is my biggest pet peeve. People using the word ironic incorrectly, and even worse, people using the not-word "unironic". Irony describes a very specific situation, using the term "unironic" is akin to calling the sky blue or saying that water is wet.imgtc.com/i/4HgTl0ebzq.jpg imgtc.com/i/60CWP2Gtlg.gifSad_Face posted...CircleOfManias posted...
