Joshjosh022 4 days ago#8 People often forget that a lot of psychological research is done on college going populations between 18-22. It's obviously not appropriate to generalize those findings to, say, a middle aged person that has never received more than a high school education. Also, the average racial demographics of college students narrows the application down even further. This is true of all research, and if you actually care about having legitimate results that can apply to more groups, then yeah it's important to diversify your participants and citations of previous works.  Citations and past research obviously serve to guide the current study, so resorting to an echo chamber of like minded individuals (which as a white male scholar, i can confirm we are the majority) isn't going to be productive and could continue trends of basing our psychological practice (or whatever field you're in) on how to best treat white, straight, male, college students. Tldr - research built on the thoughts of a diverse group of people is great and the best option. However, I'm not sure how difficult it would actually be to enforce that, as they suggest.
