http://www.express.co.uk/entertainment/gaming/828640/Nintendo-Switch-UPDATE-charts-sales-figures-PS4

For the second week in a row, the battle between the Switch v PS4 has been won by Sony’s console in Japan. The PS4 has been the top selling console in Japan for the past two weeks in a row, edging ahead of the Nintendo Switch, according to GamingBolt. The most recent figures show the PS4 selling 29,771 units compared to the Switch’s 26,256.

Switch also lost out to the PS4 in the most Japanese software charts. PS4 exclusive Gundam Versus, a new release, was the number one game in Japan, selling 121,000 units. It handily beat Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and ARMS that sold 13,436 and 12,653 between July 3 and July 9.

I mean the game stat alone is comparing sales from a fresh released game on an already established system base to a system just released 4 months ago with shortage issues and two games that released 1-3 months ago.

Other than that the system seems to be selling a bit more, but the Switch is still selling so I don't really see an issue.

looks like it doesn't help that Nintendo can't get any stock and the ps4 growing library. Dragon quest XI will also be a kick to the switch.

Wow, what a surprise. -_-

You know, for all the blatant moving of goalposts on this (highly insecure) board, NONE is as funny as the "Nintendo isn't 'competing' / is 'competing' with Sony/MS" game.

(They do something good) but they are... (they f*** something up) but they aren't...(they do something good) but they are... (they f*** something up) but they aren't...

I wasn't aware clockwork could be this funny.

You do know that pretending to be insecure on a board that's already insecure doesn't make the board any less insecure... right?

Nintendo actually needs to meet demand.

Sony's issues are with its finances, not with its rivals.

Regardless of the stock issues or not, what is the point of comparing first week sales of a game vs two games that were released weeks/months ago?
Gundam actually sold 20k more than Arms did in its first week (though PS4 has 4x the installed base), but Mario Kart 8 sold 280k compared to Gundam's 120k.

Switch overall is probably losing a little steam as consoles tend to the longer they are out.

I'm sure everyone have told that already, but anyway, it will only be a problem if there was actual Switch still left on the shelves in Japan. And I don't believe there is. Japan seems to be a top place where the Switch is ALWAYS sold out. So they cannot perform better than this for now.

Wow, you actually made a point that I agree with.

Nintendo really didn't know how the public was going to respond to the Switch, and coming off of a situation like the Wii U where they overproduced and were sitting on stock, you can see where they would be cautious going forward, especially for a non-holiday release.

I would bet that with switch being just as much of a handheld as a console, Nintendo had to know it would appeal to handheld owners more so than home console fans. So more than Wii u sales would be expected at launch

Non-holiday release doesn't really mean much, any system that launched outside of a holiday that wasn't just a bust, sold well. 3ds being the most recent, it sold very well. There really isn't anything that backs up the belief that a non holiday launch would have bad or worse sales than a holiday launch. Can even say it could benefit a system, being the only system launching, and the main focus, while the holiday season as a ton of things new and on sale everywhere
finally a new .Hack game! its been too long old friend.

Switch will sell out through 2017 in all regions. Any lack of sales is due to manufacturing.

that said, PS4 is doing pretty well in popular Japanese games right now. This holiday Gran Turismo Sport, Hot Shots Golf, early 2018 Monster Hunter World, later best version of Dragon Quest XI, KH3, FF7R. Switch basically has nothing for Japan from 2018 on. They don't care about Metroid, or even Smash. Splatoon 2 will be HUGE though!

Yep and 2017 will be the best lineup Switch ever gets. it will be a drought the rest of Switches life with maybe 1 big game for the whole year:

2018 - Smash for Switch (basically Smash for WiiU Deluxe) ((Also Mario Maker Switch, Pikmin 4, Fire Emblem, but these are smaller niche games))
2019 - Metroid Prime 4, Pokemon
2020 - Zelda BotW sequel

Switch isn't getting FF7R, Shenmue 3, KH3, or Monster Hunter World, ever.

For Nintendo first party I don't think they can do much. With the biggest Mario and Zelda released this year smash is the only game can produce any close to that level and hype and can realistic release in 2018. Besides that it's wii u ports. We all know the switch isn't getting those massive AAA third party games .

What game has realistic chance of releasing on the switch in 2018 that can match the hype of SMO and BOTW? Also it far from realistic to expect a big release every month. You can fire emblem one month and pikmin the next but those are niche.

What do you mean "finally"?

The new system that just came out beat the system that's been out for years now for two months then fell off. Even people with s*** for brains knew Switch wouldn't outsell PS4 for long.

Switch was NEVER selling well. It was NEVER a hot item. The Nintendo fanboys rushed out to buy it and that was it.

Now whether or not this changes in October when a game people actually want comes out for Switch releases remains to be seen. But until then..... stop saying Switch sold well at all. It just plain isn't true.

It's performing slightly better than Wii U in the same timeframe. Wii U also doing "well" in its first two months, especially in Japan, then falling off hard.

And stop with the "it's a supply issue" bulls***. You people already used that excuse with Wii U.

No, I'm convinced that the pitiful amount we're seeing sold is all they manage to produce. What makes no sense is the 'stockpiling' part. Why would they stockpile if they're making less than what they could sell anyway? I'm fairly sure Nintendo would prefer a Switch sold in June over one sold in July.
Komm suesser Tod
Fauch, No I'm pretty sure it does make sense. You keep back limited stock for a big release because otherwise the game sales would get s*** on.

I can guarantee it'll go up several-fold, but likely still not even close to demand.

Okay I'll make it simple cause you're clearly not getting it.

Imagine there's 200k people who were waiting for Splatoon to buy the Switch. They go to the store that day and try to buy them.

Turns out, Nintendo only stocked 30k Switches because they didn't stockpile, so now those 170k sales are lost for that week, and a ton potentially lost forever as people may not care about the game enough to buy a system by the time stock comes around.

Ok, I'll also make it simple:

Let's assume that Nintendo lost 200k sales so far by "stockpiling" units for the Splatoon launch. That's 200k less consoles sold + the opportunity cost for the software those people could have been bought so far.

I think you need to think this through again.

Those 170k sales you cited as "lost" would be units that would have been sold already.
Komm suesser Tod
.... We're talking about the game here. The game lost those sales.

The people who were specifically going to buy a Switch for that game didn't get to buy it. The units for the Switch are the same, but the launch for Splatoon suffered because the launch day buyers for it got f***ed. That's how its sales get s*** on.

First of all, you cannot prove that the people who couldn't get a Switch because of stockpiling wouldn't have bought the game anyway.

Second, the first game had amazing legs so it's very unlikely that there's a lot of people who won't buy the game because it's not available at launch.

Third, Nintendo is losing sales on their other games and licensing money on third party games.

You really need to think this through. It doesn't make sense. Bye.

All the teams releasing games this year we won't hear from again for 3-4 years. This includes:

    The Zelda team
    The Mario team
    The Splatoon team
    The Mario Kart team
    Monolith

So what do we have left?

Metroid Prime 4, with a brand new team. Just announced, no footage, thats a 2019+ release
Pokemon team has a LOT of modern programming to learn, and just released a game
Layton probably 2018, but thats not a big release
Smash probably 2018, probably a deluxe port
Fire Emblem 2018, medium sized release
pikmin 2018, but that is not a release
    Star Fox Never again

But Mario, Zelda, Splatoon, Kart, and ARMS all went this year. That pretty much sums up their best franchises, minus Pokemon which is far off, and Smash which will just be a deluxe port. I'm telling you; Q1 2018 through Q3 2019 is going to be BARREN. They'll make Smash the big 2018 holiday game, and add on Mario Maker and maybe a nice 3rd party get. Look forward to indie ports and 1st party indies like Kirby and Yoshi going for $60.

    > First Party
    > Indie

    pick one.

Also you're seemingly forgetting they still have the following IPs they can use for 2018, umm let's see...

Besides Kirby, Yoshi, Fire Emblem and Metroid coming in 2018....

    - Animal Crossing
    - Punch-Out!
    - Golden Sun
    - Kid Icarus
    - Luigi's Mansion
    - Pokemon Mystery Dungeon
    - Pokemon Rumble
    - F-Zero
    - Donkey Kong
    - 2D Super Mario game
    - Mario Party
    - Top-down Zelda game
    - Earthbound
    - Pikmin
    - Wario Land
    - WarioWare
    - Advance Wars

    etc

    Third Party titles

    - Dragon Quest
    - Shin Megami Tensei
    - SMT spin-offs titles, like Devil Survivor
    - Ace Attorney
    - Professor Layton
    - Yo-Kai Watch
    - Etrian Odyssey
    - Bayonetta
    - Tales Of
    - Dragonball titles
    - One Piece titles
    - Final Fantasy spin-offs
    - Kingdom Hearts sideline titles
    - Harvest Moon
    - Disgaea future installments
    - Whatever Capcom is doing
    - Konami titles
    - Koei Tecmo future exclusive installments
    - Very soon, many other Vita titles will make their way to the Switch

Many other Japanese 3rd party titles we haven't even heard of yet.

Nintendo has more than enough to fill 2018 and 2019 with games, they haven't even announced all of their games yet. This is just the tip of it.

Retro. I'd also be shocked if there weren't an Animal Crossing game planned to be released in the next year or so. I could easily see IS working on more than just a Fire Emblem game. Probably some third parties (Atlus, NIS, Platinum). I dunno, it won't be as good as 2017 but I don't think it's much different from other Nintendo consoles. Even their handhelds which are more heavily supported by third parties aren't constantly getting big games.
There's a mystery to be uncovered here, that's for sure. And I get the feeling the truth is beyond my wildest imagination.

The release of Dragon Quest XI is most definitely going to have a negative impact on the Switch in Japan. The good news is that will likely be compensated for when Dragon Quest XI releases on the system.
The commercial says that Church isn't for perfect people, I guess that's why I'm an atheist.

looks like it doesn't help that Nintendo can't get any stock and the ps4 growing library. Dragon quest XI will also be a kick to the switch.

um your supposed to ignore the stock issues

So? Nintendo is responsible for how many systems get shipped out.

According to some on here it's the responsibility of the retailers to have enough stock.

    Said no one ever.
    Corrin was a mistake.
Not changing sig until Ash wins a Pokemon league, becomes a Pokemon Master and/or ends his journey. Started 12/14/2016
    1. Boards
    2. Nintendo Switch
    3. Is Nintendo Switch finally losing momentum to PS4?
