How old is Mario suppose to be?

He must be 35 and up!

Do they even say how many years it was between each Mario game?! O_o

Because there sure are a lot and if that's the case then Mario could be as old as 50 years old!

From the Mario wiki:

Although Mario's age is never really confirmed, Super Smash Bros. Melee says that Mario is 26 years old when reading the description of his trophy in the game.

That makes the 'stache even more impressive.

Miyamoto says he's 24. SSBM says he's 26. So probably somewhere around there.

As for the continuity of the series, there probably aren't any official answers on that. I doubt he's intended to be significantly older in any of the games.
There's a mystery to be uncovered here, that's for sure. And I get the feeling the truth is beyond my wildest imagination.

Mario can't be 24 or 26. That would mean he's about the same age as a college graduate.

But he is obviously a grown man and probably decades into his career as a plumber. I don't believe it.

I think you're onto something. Perhaps the entire mushroom kingdom resides within a 29th dimension. Will exposure to the human world affect Mario in any adverse way? Rapid aging? THE INABILITY TO JUMP DUE TO GRAVITATION DISCREPANCIES WITHIN A SPACIAL CONFLUX?!

The real question is "How old is Yoshi supposed to be?" If the green Yoshi from Yoshi's Island is the same Yoshi that's been hanging around the gang, and has been the face of the Yoshi gang for years, then this puts him well over Mario's age.

So 24>26?

I feel this is sort of like how Sonic is supposedly 16 and Tails is supposedly 8. Fiction characters never actual like their "canon" ages, they basically always act a decade older.

Sonic being a brash, impulsive, and showboaty action hero would make perfect sense at 26. Tails being a young genius inventor who is very naive is believable for 18. Mario being a well-experienced and mature hero who still retains a sense of adventure is believable at 34 / 36.

I doubt there's any continuity in any of the series, outside of each of its own series. Just like Link in all the Zelda games, except in Mario its just a franchise that doesn't have to connect to any of the other games. Mario has had his existence in almost everything, from fighting in outer space, to being captive in Luigi's Mansion, to fighting aliens in Super Mario RPG, plus there's that Mario Time Machine game....

.... Wait, now that I think about it, that's how the rascal does all of this and stay young. He's using a Time Machine!

So Mario was abandoned or lost by his parents and was hanging around a green dino as an infant. He grows up and gets a plumbing education. He was hired to do the plumbing in a sky scraper but a gorilla kidnaps some broad... He saves her.

Goes back to working in the sewers... Obviously given a contract from the city as a thanks. With all of the city contract money he picks up some leisure hobbies such as golfing and kart racing.

Through questionable means, he continues to grow his fortune. Mainly through harassing mutated turtles. He buys a time machine and goes back to a land where he can't find his childhood friend Yoshi. With said time machine his riches continue to grow and he goes into space (don't believe the story in SMG, that's all just for PR)

Correct, there is no continuity.

"Time and again, Bowser kidnaps Peach. Why do Mario and Peach still race go-karts and play tennis with him?

SM: If you're familiar with things like Popeye and some of the old comic characters, you would oftentimes see this cast of characters that takes on different roles depending on the comic or cartoon. They might be businessman in one [cartoon] or a pirate in another. Depending on the story that was being told, they would change roles. So, to a certain degree, I look at our characters in a similar way and feel that they can take on different roles in different games. It's more like they're one big family, or maybe a troupe of actors"

Yep, I've had to explain the confusion to my kids as well, as they've ventured down the video game path and have been confused by Bowser being a villain in the NES games and the shows, only to turn around and join sides in some of the rpg's, and still has the humanity to take the time to play games with Mario and company on the side.

Basically video game characters taking on the persona of a video game actor that has different roles depending on the game's story (sometimes a villain, sometimes... not so much a villain). And I've loved it all the more for this. Super Mario RPG would have still been a good game, but nowhere near as appealing to me had Bowser not become a member of the party.
