They need to try to not hire so many cringe worthy idiots. Well idiots isn't the right. People with such s*** opinions and analysis. The funny thing is those are the people they kept after the round of layoffs they had earlier this year.

Will this affect his relationship with the team and his psuedo celebrity girlfriend?? ESPN right this second is talking about another party thing Gronk did and if he's going too far. Plenty of sports happened yesterday, plenty are happening today, but nope they'd rather talk about this.

less "shows" and more sports, start showing soccer or something, curling, volleyball, tennis, anything. The problem with this is with FS1 and NBCSN they now have to compete with them. So they aren't always gonna get the rights to air something. For example the Confederation Cup or w/e is on FS1. So they are left with doing "shows" as you say. |

honestly, I've watched the channel a few times when I get lunch at this wings place and it strikes me as E! for sports; tabloid journalism that's exactly what it is, nobody gives a s*** about the players lives and what they do off the field, they care about their playstyles, stats, predictions of their teams and future drafts. At least ,I assume they do, I don't follow sports at all
I got nothing

The main reason all spurred from, like everything, the way people consume media is far different and ratings are down for everything. And with sports specifically, s*** like YouTube and clips online in general have made shows like SportsCenter obsolete. You no longer need to watch highlight shows when anyone can access any highlight at any time on their phone. They then doubled down on the personalities over authenticity due to the popularity of First Take, specifically circa Tebow era when Skip went full on troll mode. And people eventually got tired of straight characters all the time.
s*** like including politics, including WWE and eGaming, and other similar things was clearly an attempt to drive up ratings, but they weren't the issue that had people stop watching. |
Isn't the Dan LeBatard show one of their highest rated shows
|
There's also the whole "content shows" over actual sports is a thing because sports leagues, at least the major ones, have been able to capitalize on their popularity and drove the cost of their content up through the roof. That in turn forced even minor sports leagues to drive their costs up.

I disagree, there are soooo many sports out there they can give exposure to. I feel the US is stuck watching the big three (MLB, NBA, NFL) because thats all they will play or talk about. There are so many sports they can show and just choose to talk about lebron for and hour instead.
While I may not agree with your opinion, I will defend to the death your right to have it.

ESPN needs the leagues more than the inverse. You can't put out sports that no one gives a s*** about. Ratings for these shows have been higher than when ESPN does put on stuff like lacrosse or rugby, so financially it's better for them to keep with what they have. But as I said, people not needing to watch SportsCenter and similar shows anymore due to being able to stream highlights at anytime will be the thing that kills ESPN. Their business model is obsolete |

Maybe they should stop whining about viewership and go back to being about sports Veggeta_MAX posted... You guys do know that it ESPN isn't exclusive to just talking about traditional sports and its scoreboards right? Right?

Everyone who isn't an opportunistic hack knows this People aren't "leaving" ESPN, they're ditching cable entirely. I can't even think of a cable package offered that doesn't include espn They're simply too many ways now to get highlights, info and opinions on teams and sports you're interested in without sitting down to watch sports center or Mike and Mike. the "ESPNBC" crowd is using this shift as a means to argue an opinion that isn't really the truth. ESPN is losing subscribers, but it ain't because of politics. Like someone here mentioned, shows like highly questionable and the right time do great numbers

It's mostly due to millennial cord-cutters, but also due to changing content. Becoming TMZ-lite, turning every racial issue into a week long story, having every talking head parrot SJW rhetoric, etc. Not to mention dumb decisions like showing Michael Sam making out with his boyfriend every hour for a week after the draft. Probably lost 10,000 subscribers every time they aired that. ESPN is quite out of touch with the typical sports fan.

ESPN should be one of four things:
1) Actual games 2) Sportscenter (focusing on highlights and nothing else, unless there's major news a la #4) 3) 30 for 30 4) Meaningful press conferences If something else is on ESPN and it's not one of those four things, then they're wasting time. Don't give a s*** what their pundits think or how Tebow is doing or any nonsense fluff piece garbage. Games, highlights, documentaries, news. That's it.
