There were no 'convert or die'. There is nothing to be preached in Koran a book that even muslims dont understand, full of confusions, fables and incoherence. I have read it and in comparison to Bible it is a basically a joke, full of historical and factual errors. There is no salvation or new life in it. It upholds slavery, murder, loot, rape, sexual enslavement, pedophile, narcissism etc which are basically abominations in the sight of God. The reason why people join is that they get to do these legally, it basically nourishes and feeds the evil nature of man, it is usually the social misfits, psychopaths, criminals who join. A sane person with commonsense who reads koran rationally will never join it. There the thousands of muslims who are leaving Islam on daily basis.
