Mass Effect: A - Philosophies

Oh yes, this takes me back to the times of DA:Inquisition's release. Every day, for many, many many weeks, there were topics like "Lesbians/ female players got the best looking romance options and "Why are the straight male romance options so limited/ugly, doesn't Bioware remember their REAL audience?! on gfaqs. On a daily basis. It wasn't even uncommon to have TWO similar topics on the front page at the same time.

I didn't own that game at the time. Hell, I wasn't even interested in Dragon Age until recently (I got all three games from flea markets but I've yet to play them). But still, all the wah wah wah-drama from those topics was just too delicious to ignore :'D. So I kept lurking in those topics, watching them with the same enthusiasm as my grandma watches The Bold and the Beautiful.

From what I've seen, this "SJW-conspiracy theory" isn't limited to just Bioware games. Instead it applies to, as others have already pointed out, just about everything that doesn't specifically cater to typical white male power-fantasy. Perish the thought that games would try to have more realistic, average looking people IN GENERAL (yes, even women and love interests). Perish the thought that there could be more minorities present in games, be it cultural, sexual or even religious minorities.

And especially perish the thought that the there could be other acceptable, actually GOOD video games, besides the ones featuring a white male protagonist with a bountiful, preferably scantily dressed damsel in distress at his side...

Because if a game, especially a game with a mature rating on its cover, doesn't have those things, then its automatically SJW propaganda that's rotting the whole industry from within D=< !!

It's only proper mental cases that use the term SJW. Its something certain types of people made up to gloss over their own inadequacies. Just ignore it and move on with your life.

So you excuse the bad storytelling that takes you out of the game? The poorly written people meant to represent minorities? The abundant use of "tell" and not "show" with popular terms being thrown around to click some check boxes?

also among the neckbearded "omg sjws are ruining games" crowd I've noticed a distinct trend when it comes to female preferences. They typically are only into a very narrow range of beauty, exemplified by the blonde white models with huge t*** and a nonexistent waist that you might see on a playboy cover. The idea of an attractive woman with say, short hair, or a body type that isn't "skinny model with fake t***," or maybe even black skin? It doesn't even occur to them.

Wasn't it something about the lead animator being only chosen because she's a woman and has no experience with animation and passing over more skilled males for less skilled females to promote "equality"?

It's not so much the game, so much as it was what the higher ups kept preaching about it. At least, that's what I think.

The game isn't very SJW-ish probably. If anything the real issue should be the lack of will, effort and the so called "humanity" that go put into it. People are probably just going "this one guy working on it said anti-white stuff so the whole team must be SJWs".

Good observation OP, over the last few years social justice warriors have infiltrated the game development process at the executive level, ordering talented coders to design games that blur the lines between male and female. Rather than put men in dresses like the star trek tv series did, modern games give females short hair, put them in pants and increase their jaw size....interestingly, removing naturally occurring gender differences was one of the key edicts of marxism as it was a crucial step to destroy the nuclear family unit thereby making the redistribution of wealth very easy.

Where did you see this? A lead animator for a AAA developer having no experience with animation is newsworthy in and of itself, so I'd like to see it.

Ah yes, the so called "bad storytelling". I've seen folks complain about Steve Cortez in ME 3. Saying how this gay character was "shoehorned into the game". But last I checked, you're never forced to interract with him that much. And you're definitely NOT forced to talk about his deceased husband let alone start a romance with Steve. In fact, you can pretty much ignore him if you want to.

I didn't, and I most certainly didn't feel that his side story/ character arc felt "forced". Makes me wonder if it had been a woman grieving over her dead husband or a man grieving over his dead wife, would that character's side story been classified as "shoehorned" so easily? I doubt so.

I was playing as a femshep, so Steve's romance was off limits for me anyway. But even without the actual romance, I liked Steve as character. Both his personal stuff as well as all that quipping between him and James (like Mako vs. Hammerhead discussion).

Now, I'm not saying that there aren't characters in games that are so poorly written that they feel like walking tropes for minority X. I've yet to encounter one that makes me cringe though. But more often than not, folks seem to judge ANY minority representation as "shoehorned" element to the game, just because those characters are part of minorities. If a character has an unimpressive character arc or uninspiring dialogue, then that makes them even more "shoehorned".

What many folks tend to gloss over, is how this character's "poor" areas compare to those of other characters in the game. There might be countless white characters with typical, uninspiring fetch quests in the game, yet the only one that gets REALLY bashed for it is that one black NPC. Or the game might have bland dialogue on multiple occasions, yet this one gay character gets bashed more than the others.

To me, it seems that the whole "bad writing, immersion breaking" argument is, more often than not, just another "SJW's are the devil"-warmongering. It's a more convenient way to hide one's intolerance towards others by masking it as constructive criticism. I've little doubt that MANY folks who claim this just can't stand the idea of having minorities, like gays in games, no matter how WELL they've been written. So instead of admitting that "No, I don't want gays in my games." it's more politically correct to claim that having gays breaks one's immersion to the game.

I'm not saying that "having minority tropee characters" isn't a real problem that couldn't or doesn't exist (even thought I've yet to see one that would truly ruin my immersion). But really, this thing REALLY gets blown out of proportion.

@mecha_no_maniac

The problem is when you just have a character whose ONLY CHARACTER IS "Hi. I'm gay." It's jarring and flat out pandering for the sake of pandering.

People didn't complain about Kung Jin being a homosexual, because he was a multi-layered character with a personality beyond "I like dicks".

So, please. Try to come up with an excuse better than whatever conspiracy nonsense I just saw.
