- Why is Mario Kart 64 put on such a pedestal?
Often times I hear people say it was the best Mario kart ever and the new ones are lame compared to it. However it offered almost nothing in content compared to newer ones. So why is it so loved? And why do I think back so fondly on it while playing MK8 despite knowing MK8 is better in every way?

It was excellent for it's time, but it's aged poorly. Newer Mario Kart titles are just so much better, in nearly every way.

I think it just had the luck of releasing at a time when built-in four-player was still very rare. It's the memories with friends that buoys it.

I don't see how anyone can enjoy MK64 today, having played the newer Mario Kart titles. I've tried going back to it a few times in recent years. The nostalgia wears off in a couple minutes and I quickly realize how awful the controls are and how boring the races are overall.

The music of MK64 has never been topped.

It was the game that allowed me to git gud at the series. The rubberbanding in that game was outright unfair thanks to reverse rubberbanding. If they got too far ahead they'd accelerate faster than you could drive. It has its faults, but nothing touched it until DS imo on. SC was a SMK port basically, double dash was fun but lacking. If you could gold 64 cups three starring in later games is trivial for me at least. It's more so is the game gonna f*** you over or not. Skill wise you were good though.

The same reason the Nintendo 64 is on such a pedestal. It was the first 3D console most people owned and even the first Nintendo console for many. Therefore it's inherently the best thing in the world and nothing will ever top it because people are nostalgia zombies.
Personally, I've grown to hate nearly every game on the Nintendo 64. Most of them had terrible controls and consisted of about four levels that you had to play about ten times each to complete. Incomplete and uninspired. I'll take the latest consoles any day. ClayFighter 63 1/3, however, will always be one of my favorite fighting games of all time. I'm aware of its flaws, but it's still fun and makes me laugh whenever I play it. That's all I can ask for. |

Idk, I tried playing g it a few years ago d it has aged terribly,it is hard to just play it cuz of how bad the graphics and controls are, let alone win a race.
Double Dash has some pretty aged controls too, but it's a lot better. I can't remember DS. And Wii and 7 are fine.

I don't know. Even though I owned every Mario Kart, I didn't care about them until Double Dash. It was the first to have unlockable characters, and with unlockables as an incentive, I continued playing DD to completion.

Still my favorite Mario Kart. Best music overall (MK8 is a close second), liked some stages, still think it was the most fun MK when it comes to driving at 150cc as you had to consider the risk of spinning in the harder tracks and also I liked the track difficulty balance. Main problem was not having music at 3+ players and being only able to progress by finishing 4th or higher which is stupid imo.

I think it had the best battle mode, although I never unlocked all the battle courses in Double Dash. The default battle arenas in Double Dash were pretty bad and battle mode has been pretty lame since. Overall, I would probably say Double Dash is my favorite Mario Kart followed by MK8DGT-Flip Munk PSN-Flip-Munk 3DS-4382-1981-6727I feel like for some of us, Mario Kart 64 is held really high up because of the memories and fun it gave back in the day. When we could play with 3 other family members or friends on a normal basis, at maybe get with friends or whatever, the game really shined , or the franchise rather. And why newer Mario Karts may not have shown as "better" could be because we grown up and while we want the experience we had rekindled, only some of us can get that to happen.

My sister and I had some fun screwing around, but without four people wanting to play, Battle Mode prior to Mario Kart DS is often a waste of space being nothing to do if you don't have the precisely optimal configuration of friends.
It returned in Mario Kart DS and it's usually a slog to go through thanks to the survival mode, which I think just doesn't work for more than 4 players.
arminillo posted...And the rubberbanding isnt as bad as supercircuit (the worst mario kart)
Super Circuit never had Mario Kart 64 levels of rubberbanding. The AI is among the tamest in the series actually. In Mario Kart 64, you can see rubberbanders spring right back to you if they get by a shell (and those shells do a lot of damage in that game) and the "rubberbanding" can get so terrible that some AI in 150cc/Extra Mode can shoot right ahead and you can kiss their tailpipe goodbye as you won't catch up to them no matter how hard you tried (it doesn't help that the Red Shells are awful, their tracking mechanism so bad they often shoot right into walls or hit the wrong opponent. For their behavior, they sort of zoom a little bit aimlessly, but then they suddenly charge into your opponent). If there is a game Mario is playable in, I main him.

The blue shell would go hit each player in order giving the shooter the potential to catch up while also being able to be avoided if you were skilled. I remember games where I ran 2 laps with a blue shell like 4 pixels behind me to win.
Also the battle mode levels(where I generaly spend 90% of my MK playing) were superb.AstralFrost: What part is unique about the Wii U thats actually positive? The underpowered console? The direct ipad ripoff controller? The slew of platformers?Because it was the biggest jump in quality the series has seen, and probably will ever see. I mean, going from Super Mario Kart, to Mario Kart 64 is astronomical. So many things were refined, polished, and just made better. Subsequent games simply haven't seen that amount of a quality leap. Yes, they're better, but instead of taking a leap forward, like 64 did, it's only a step.RPG terms I use;
Traditional RPG, Advanced RPG, Action RPG, Strategy RPG, and Hybrid RPGI guess because it felts fresh and fun at the time. What a pathetic post. So because you don't like it, basically, anyone who does must be a 'nostalgia zombie'.
Lots of people, myself included, still play on the N64 despite having current generation consoles. We do so because the N64 has games that are still great even today, not because of nostalgia or anything else you'd prefer to attribute other people's judgement to when you don't agree with them. It's the same reason I still play on my original Xbox and PS2, too. Gameplay over graphics. Granted many games for each console are dated and have been bettered on later machines, but each console still has some standout games that prevent me from ever packing the console away in the closet.I'm a PC and console gamer - I love good games, regardless of their host system.
For all things N64: http://z9.invisionfree.com/Nintendo_64_Forever/Why is a game that brought in many general elements still regarded as one of the best even though it hasn't aged well? Gee, I wonder why...
But real talk, it's the same reason people stick to certain older games even though they haven't aged well-your general hate of something either just to hate or jump on the bandwagon isn't changing anyone's view points:
-It was one of the first home console racing games to have more than 2 people play at a time.
-It improved the rather lackluster Battle Mode from its predecessor and is what the series has been using to this day as its general formula for Battle Mode...until Wii, at least.
-It more or less set up the main 8 staple Racers in the series (Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Yoshi, DK, Wario, and Bowser).
-It introduced certain mechanics such as Mini-turbos, better drifting, Slipstreams that were used in a number of the games after it.
-Nostalgia.
So yeah, regardless of what the later games have done for you all and how much you hate 64, it's not going to change any minds of those who still love the game. Hell, I know it's aged like utter ****, and I still understand what made it so great back in the day without coming off as trying to be one of the cool kids or a contrarian for the sake of being a contrarian. I didn't really like DD that much but it was better than 64. DS-MK8 were amazing for me at the time. I still like 7 a lot bc it has that 64 throwback music and brings back memories of so many people I played 64 with that aren't a part of my life now. I think it is nostalgia for some people that like 64 so much. The music is what gets me. Takes me right back to wishing I wasn't' a poor college student and could buy my own 64 lol I did like the level design better in 64 than DD. It's still a very enjoyable game, but I can agree that it has aged poorly and later titles have been better in a variety of ways. But as to why it's on a pedestal, I'd say that it was an important game in the franchise's history.
Super Mario Kart was already known to be a critically acclaimed game. But the jump from one generation to another isn't always easy for franchises (examples being Bubsy and Sonic the Hedgehog). Considering this was also just the second game in the franchise, it was important that the game could be good enough from a performance and entertainment perspective to give legs to future games. Expanding the range of the battle mode fields, as well as expanding from being able to have two people to four were big changes.
With that said, it's natural that newer games offer more for players than what their predecessors did. It's not by any means the best, but it's still an enjoyable game and does deserve some recognition for how we play Mario Kart games today.3DS FC: 2595-4384-6463

Not to us PAL users, sadly. Mario Kart 64 was a bad PAL port, being noticeably slower than the NTSC version.
