first time investment

You have to start somewhere, or else you'll never have any investments.

The more important questions are those like: What is your time frame? Are you prepared for market fluctuations? Have you educated yourself about the investment? Etc.

If you are thinking about this long-term (say, more than 3 years), then there are some good general mutual funds that allow investing with this amount of funding. (At least, from my US perspective.) My first stock market investment was only $2K and I grew them steadily over time.

If you are looking at a shorter time frame, or are not yet comfortable with risk, there are always CDs or short term bond funds.

In any case, read up and educate yourself about the market and how to invest wisely without being unduly conservative.
