Cause the people avoiding spoilers wouldn't be watching those videos/streams in the first place.

I have a friend who has been waiting for so long to play BotW, he has avoided EVERYTHING about it. The total of his knowledge was:

- Play as Link
- Open world

He didn't even know Zelda was in it or that there was VA.

He was to get a Switch next week and start playing but on Monday he saw an end game spoiler in a Youtube video thumbnail and title and now he has lost all interest in playing and hasn't spoken to anyone since.

It only takes something that small to ruin the lives of some people, spoiler protection methods are nowhere NEAR as strong/harsh as they should be. The youtuber in question won't be named but has had all their BotW video Titles/Thumbnails edited to be the game name and logo only respectively.

Spoilers should have a mandatory 6 month minimum period where they cannot be discussed or shown except under strict guidelines that prevent any possibility of being seen/heard unasked.

I think this is the first time I've ever seen someone care about a Zelda spoiler. Thought even newborns come into the world knowing how a Zelda/Mario game ends.

I can't believe you're this blind.

Any company CAN do the same, but they don't. Again, Sega did this with Shining Force and it was a PR nightmare for them. You think Atlus is some special snowflake that they can do no wrong? Preventing people from enjoying a medium in a way that society ACCEPTS is a surefire way to get yourself into the frying pan.

Once again, I reiterate for good measure, no other company does s*** like this, so naturally people have the right to be upset.

This will effect Atlus in no way whatsoever. Are you buying the game. Yes . Then your statement is ludicrous..Don't even bring that BS here.

I'm not buying the game new, that's for sure. They aren't getting my money. Streaming and Let's Plays have existed for the past 10 years. Atlus CAN'T prevent spoilers due to how fast and free the internet is, nor should they be able to say "f*** this particular medium, let's have no spoilers" because that obviously doesn't sit well, otherwise this topic wouldn't be as heated as it is. Movie production and distribution companies are much more fierce about this sort of thing, but I can go on Wikipedia and read the entire plot of Logan right now. Nothing is stopping me from finding spoilers if I want them.

Honestly, if the punishment wasn't so severe as getting a strike or suspension, I wouldn't complain nearly as badly. But this course of action just shows me how foolish and backwards Atlus is.

This topic is heated because people like to argue. Everybody here will buy the game enjoy it and that will be the end of it. You people that have no understanding of copyright laws and no understanding of Atluses position and why they are talking it will have absolutely no effect whatsoever. 6 months from now when Atlus allows streaming again nobody will even remember this. Persona 4 Lets Plays are a dime a dozen.

And if you don't buy the game thats your loss . nobody cares. People who take that stance will be few and far between. They would lose far more sales by allowing Lets Plays...

Stfu. Seriously. These people worked their asses off on a game and they want people to experience by buying it and playing it.

They dont want youtubers or twitchers to spoil the game. They have every right to do what they are doing as they are the copy write holders.

It is clearly stated in copywrite laws that people are not allowed to show games or movies or music on large scale basis such as youtube.

Its up to them to enforce it if they choose to. And if they want to protect the hard work that they done they have every right to.

They are not saying you can't do s*** like nintendo they are just limiting you on obvious stuff and giving you the person who wants to do it a heads up.

This is not the wrong way to go about it but the correct way. The wrong way is what nintendo does. The wrong way would also be not giving this heads up which they clearly did.

Its their product they have every right to protect it

Supposedly nothing. The company's see no difference.

However in practice I've noticed monetized guys tend to get priority on takedowns, while people just streaming for fun tend to fly under the radar.

A friend and I posted playthroughs for months on Youtube without anyone caring, but after we monetized the channel not an hour later we suddenly started getting takedowns and the channel collapsed. We since decided it wasn't worth trying to get an extra few bucks.

But you are supporting it by playing it. All you're doing is showing you have no principles. If you really had a problem with Atlus and you actually wanted to make a stand, then you wouldn't buy the game at all.

It's not a bad analogy, you just glossed over the entire point. In both situations, companies are doing something you don't like. Someone is buying their product for you (because someone had to buy that used game). In both cases this would be considered a scumbag move. Seriously, you're going to rob the developers of their money they deserve for the game you enjoyed, because they won't let you stream? That's just spiteful behavior. Anyone who buys a game used (from a chain store like Gamestop) is worse than a pirate, because there's a good chance the pirate wouldn't have bought the game otherwise.

No understanding of Atlus' position? They literally said they're striking channels to prevent spoilers. They didn't say they feared a loss in sales. Hell, if that was the case and I were them, I wouldn't have made a public statement at all.

I understand what copyright is. But I also understand that this game came out half a year ago. Not only do I understand that, but I also understand how insanely difficult it is to control information on the Internet. Atlus' reasons for controlling info is good. Their actions, though, are bad when compared to the rest of society and the industry.

They have every right to do this legally. But if you think people won't be upset when a medium they use and create for the past 10 years is suddenly limited, then you're delusional. Atlus is going against the norm and they'll get bad PR for it. Simple as that.

Oh, and get me some statistics on how Let's Plays hurt sales. Otherwise I don't believe you.

With games you still have to play it. To make it accessible to your audience you have to play it kind of fast. Which means there's different ways to experience it. Comparing games to movies, movies to music or music to games is silly.

That's where I disagree. The gameplay in persona games is lackluster and really only exists to develop the characters and progress the plot.

Game play is good ol' traditional turn base jrpg. Not for everyone especially those that like hack and slash action.

I enjoy traditional RPGs, and I've been playing games since the SNES days. I'm not saying the gameplay is bad, just that it's about as cookie cutter traditional RPG as they come. Can you seriously say that you play Persona for the gameplay? I can point out hundreds of RPGs with better combat systems.

Yeah, it's spiteful behavior. Media companies receive spite all the time. Look at the Wii U, or the initial launch of the PS3, or Nintendo's Youtube policies.

I'm making a statement with my wallet. Yes, it's full of spite because I don't believe Atlus is in the right here. God forbid we don't let companies know what we think, otherwise they'd walk all over us and some might even manipulate consumers for being so blind.

I'm glad you avoided spoilers for those games! It's just I've found a fairly distinct correlation between the overall knowledge I have of a game (how many spoilers I've been exposed to) and my enjoyment of it. As such, I've fought tooth and claw to avoid spoilers (except in that inital release moment, when I payed dearly), making it quite upsetting when I entrusted Atlus (or maybe rather Youtube by proxy) to help me in my quest to avoid spoilers, and I was let down.

Yeah, I mean, it's kinda go figure that places like Twitter would have spoilers, but I thought I had that figured out, and I did, so it's just sad that it would be so easy for someone not already spoiled to experience a significant decline in their eventual enjoyment of the game.

They are hypocrites.

They didn't do anything about the japanese release. There were numerous streamers (both japanese and american, translators or non-translators) who played the game from beginning to end without any consequences. Share button being blocked was the only thing, and the only person that got shafted was a streamer named tofu and that was only because he streamed the game before release. He got a new account and beat the game on that one, live (1k+ people)

Jiyuna also went further than 7/7 in the japanese version and that was actually pretty recent, since he took his time with the game

And now they're giving the USA branch the order to shut down everything? I don't now if they realized but there were 7 f***ing months to get the game spoiled. They started shutting down things on youtube but eventually they gave up and all kinds of s*** showed up (from full playthroughs to VERY spoilery thumbnails with boss fights and key cutscenes)

Hopefully everyone will s*** on them and they'll cancel this restriction, at least for twitch. Twitch, as a platform, will never spoil people who don't want to get spoiled, simply for the fact that you actually need to go through several steps if you want to even enter a channel that's streaming the game

If money is the issue, then they are not hypocrites... they are b****es and outdated morons akin to nintendo that don't want to acknowledge that games thrive BECAUSE of twitch, and not despite it

Not true. I did an extensive search. There are no English Lets Plays at all. They do not exist. There is one guy who played the Japanese game and made an effort to translate it to English. Its not very good. He spent most of the time trying to figure out what they said and the translations where simple and didn't feel right. I watched it for about 5 minutes. So it would take an extreme effort to get spoiled if your an English speaker. Thats reality. And that is due to Atlus. Thank you Atlus. English people don't speak Japanese so Japanese Lets Plays are meaningless to this conversation.

It's a s***ty thing of them to do. Anyone ego stroking about "let's players making money off other people's work" are idiots that have no idea what it takes to upload content. If there was a way for Atlus to remove content without getting people's livelihoods shut down, I wouldn't be that upset, but YouTube's s*** system is what they'll use, and that means channels could get tanked because a bunch of entitled brats can't avoid watching videos over spoilers.

And yes, the statements says this is about SPOILERS, not about sales. If Atlus wants to say "To avoid spoilers" then that's what the conversation is about, and it's f***ing stupid. People don't need their hands held like this. We don't need companies banning information about their product to avoid us going, "Oh no, now I know the ending!" And even if we were to argue that it's about sales, video games make 90% of their money in the first month. If this isn't lifted by May, it's a pointless ban on information, because everyone that would buy the game new, already would have.
Icefang526 41 minutes ago#177
I'm generally indifferent to this, but I do find it a bit odd that Atlus would care so much as to go to such extremes.

I think gamers who want to 100% avoid being spoiled generally have the good sense to avoid watching videos and/or visiting forums discussing the game. In that sense, Atlus's actions seem kinda like those of an overprotective parent.

That, or they are somehow worried that people will take watching playthroughs as a substitute for actually playing the game, thereby affecting sales, which is a pretty ridiculous notion.

The number of people who continue to defend game companies' terrible anti-fan policies continues to astound me.

You know there's such a thing as being able to enjoy games made by a company while still criticizing them for doing things you disagree with, right? Like, just because Atlus makes great games doesn't mean you can't still think their anti-streaming policy is draconian and an attack on fair use.

Companies that make great games need to have their feet held CONSTANTLY to the fire. Otherwise, they'll turn into Konami, a once great gaming company that's now in it 100% for the money and making mostly pachinko machines and microtransaction cell phone games because their fans applauded everything they did no matter how stupid it was.
