But the ceremony is “not about segregation,” said Michael Huggins, president of the Harvard Black Graduate Student Alliance, which is organizing the event. Students of all racial and ethnic backgrounds may attend, he said, and the black students taking part in the ceremony also plan to attend the university’s official commencement on May 25 in Harvard Yard.

“The primary reason we wanted to do this is we really wanted to come together to celebrate Harvard black excellence and brilliance,” said Huggins, who is graduating from the Kennedy School. “This is really an opportunity for students to build fellowship and build a community.”

So they want a separate graduation ceremony from white students and have the balls to claim it's about unification, not segregation. They've just set themselves back 60 years.

they're not restricting black graduates from participating in the main commencement, and it looks like people of all races are welcome to the black grad.

so, uh, maybe you shouldn't be suggesting an event being segregated when it isn't at all.

Edit: from the article:

old news.

I think it's silly, but colleges have done it before.

Honestly, what would your reaction be if it was white people?

Sounds like they're having an additional, non-official ceremony. omg the humanity

it's not a fair comparison, since the institution went from being exclusively white to still being mostly white.

As long as it's equal to the white graduation it's ok.

As a bonus, these students will arrive at the graduation via special blacks-only buses, and will have the privilege once at the ceremony to use a blacks-only drinking fountain.

Do they all have to sit at the back of those buses?
So real talk, they're just doing this so they can get a photo op with a high proportion of black graduates right?

Is it just me or is this a careful but unsuccessful evasion? This is essentially saying "it's only for black people really but I guess we won't call the police if someone else decides to watch."

Note that despite their caution, they still do only say black people will be wearing the cap and gown.

So, if all the white students got together to celebrate their success, and said "oh sure, everyone's welcome, but this is to celebrate white brilliance." How do you think that would jive with folks?

I mean, the traditional commencement is a remnant to the celebration of white graduates.

if the school/student body didn't do anything to change that I've the generations, idk if you can use that against groups that don't want others to set their narratives of what achievement celebration should be when they want to do something that'sspecial to them.

Joking aside, I don't really understand this rationale. Isn't that what the standard graduation already does? Why would these black students want to have a celebration that indicates that their achievements or "community" are different?

^ up until about two weeks ago, I worked at a college.

most of the people that participated in the black grad did so because there was no real limit to the number of guests that they could bring.

like, the main graduation would allow each graduate about nine tickets (they could buy/trade for more from other grads, though)

but in the black grad, it wasn't uncommon for someone to bring 15-20 guests.

there's also music and food, so the event is livelier, and that appeals to a lot of people.

the school also offered: Hispanic/ Latin(a/o), Asian/Pacific-Islander, LGBT, and Native American grads, but I never went to those.

You know how when a baby takes its first steps, everyone cheers and gets excited?

Maybe Harvard is so racist that the idea that black people can actually graduate blows their mind so they want to celebrate more.

Harvard isn't organizing the event, though...

My guess is that the people who have a problem with this never graduated college or they would have already had an issue with this when it was already a thing. For a long time.

tbh, its about having a grad with no white people....white people aren't welcome, but they lie and act like its to preserve "black excellence".....very racist indeed
