- It's ridiculous that funimation is still running with the term "Tri Beam...
They don't want to alienate the Toonami/OG Funi fans. I'm not a fan either but whaddaya gonna do? I'm more annoyed the subs for Japanese Super keep a lot of dub terms in. People that prefer those terms don't even usually like the Japanese version so why not just make accurate subs for Super? Funnily enough Tri Beam isn't in Super's subs though

Your average North American DBZ fan will feel sad, confused, and betrayed if they changed the move names 20 years after the fact. Serves em right. It would be justice after all the bastardizations forced on fans of the original show back 20 years ago having to suffer through all the special beam cannons, destructo disks, Spirit Bombs, kuhmayamayas, Tiens, Pikkons, Hercules, Icaruses, King Kais and Kayo-Kens. No f***s would be given.

Dragon Ball is actually one of Funimation's worst dubs. Many characters' names and attacks are "translated" incorrectly as a result of nostalgia, censorship, and the f***ed up original dub (that Funimation eventually replaced).
Kuririn is not Krillin (losing on on the chestnut pun in his name). Tenshinhan is not Tien. Kaioshin (World King God) is not Supreme Kai. Kienzan (Ki Circle Slash) is not Destructo Disc. Kikoho (Ki Control Cannon) is not Tri-Beam. Saiya-jin is not Saiyan (they didn't even pronounce the "Sai" in Saiya-jin correctly; it's sai like sigh, not sai like say) Makankosappo (Demonic Piercing Light Murder Gun) is not Special Beam Cannon. Dodonpa (Boom Wave) is not Dodon Ray. Genki Dama (Energy Sphere) is not Spirit Bomb. Hakaishin (Destruction God) is not Destroyer.

This is your first example? You can't possibly see how that would translate that way? The "Kuri" in Kuririn comes from kuri, Japanese for chestnut (also to his shaved head). He names his daughter after chestnut as well (but with Maron being French for chestnut). I am not sure how you would even reach Kililin though. There's a "koo" syllable at the beginning of his name.

I actually don't mind Krillin, "Kuririn" looks like terrible SNK style Engrish to most people.
The one that I despise is the "Frieza" spelling.

Oh yeah, because that pun wouldn't be lost on your average English speaking viewer in the first place... It's a series that originated in Japan and whose names are roughly puns of Japanese and Chinese words. Many things in this series would get lost for anybody who doesn't understand either language. Yet quite a few things in this series have kept their original pronunciations in the dub. Many characters in this series are tied together by the similarities in their names. I don't see how Chi Chi and Gohan are any more fitting than Kuririn or Maron. Neo-Violen posted... "Kuririn" looks like terrible SNK style Engrish to most people. To people who don't understand Japanese or Chinese, yes, it would be awkward. That's probably why it was "translated" to Krillin (to avoid that awkward "ku" syllable that is rarely used in the English language). Romaji posted... Klillin is what SH Figuarts called him, lol. It's Klilyn, actually. Those same figures (and that ToP promotional video on Toei) also lists out Son Goku as "Son Gokou." Even if they are official, I wouldn't trust them that much. %u30AF is "Ku," not "Kli."

I don't see how Chi Chi and Gohan are any more fitting than Kuririn or Maron. I don't get what you mean. Outside adding another "r" to Maron's name, her pun was unaltered. Kuririn, on the other hand, sounds less like a legitimate name to Western viewers and more like someone doing a racist Asian accent trying to say "Krilin" or "Klilin." |

Because for TWENTY. LONG. f***ING. YEARS. I've had to put up with ignorant fans "Who didn't have anything to do with that" acting like complete f***ing ass***s and not respecting people that grew up watching it in Japanese. Watching the original. I'd be in an FYE and I'd be with a friend who I grew up with. We'd be in the Anime section and I'd point out the Lord Slug movie. "Hey dude, they have movie 3! LOL, you wanna watch Goku turn purple and fake Super Saiyajin?" Random employee/kid in FYE: "Don't you mean Super SAY-AN???? What are you guys? One of those Jap Lovers???" Sorry, no f***s would be given if they got their feelings hurt. Imagine every kid from this day forth calling the Jedi in Star Wars JEEDAYS just for the f***s of it. Then you tell them. Um, don't you mean Jedi kid? NO OLD MAN! ITS JEEDAY NOW! What are you? A Jap lover???? Literally sick of you all.

I doubt that the average person would go on to be an "ass***", especially if you don't actually know these people. You know, I'd almost agree with you because you're using reason and logic. The problem is, you've been proven wrong thousands upon thousands of times in just about every Dragon Ball thing in existence where communication with other fans is possible. I shouldn't even have to mention the pure levels of doucebaggery when trying to watch a video in original Japanese on Youtube. People literally go in there to comment "granny Goku" and nothing else. I can't even tell you how many times I had to apologize to people in lobbies playing on Xenoverse because they don't know who I'm talking about when I say Paikuhan or pronounce it "YAMUCHA". I have to purposely go out of my way to say "Krillin" to appease them. The fans who came 10 to 15 years after I finished watching the show. Don't even get me started on KAKAROT. Which is the worst translation error out of almost all of them. Sometimes I play with buddies and we all know what a Kuririn is and a Genki-Dama... but we have to spell it out for the randoms that join us, then they get MAD AT US for not calling it a Spirit Bomb. Disrespectful ass***s as far as the eye can see. I've dealt with hundreds. I've witnessed thousands. I've debated with a good handful of them in this board. The worst is when people get downright f***ing nasty. When the voice actor Joji Yanami for Kaio-Sama got ill, there were people hoping and saying they hope he dies. Then they would transition the conversation to "granny Goku" and hoped she would die too. I've heard everything and I have nothing but vitriol for English dub fans that are nothing but disrespectful to the original cast and voice actors. I have nothing but middle fingers for anyone that insults the show or wishes harm on them. I've seen way to much of it. The truth is, the average Dragon Ball fan is a xenophobic turd. So if they get mad that Destructo Disk suddenly and correctly becomes Kienzan in an upcoming dub, f*** em. If you don't think of yourself as one of these people and have an open mind, an interest in what it was before it was butchered by dubbers and enjoy the original Japanese versions, I don't include you in this. But you know as well as I do, that's not the majority.

If it bothers you that much then just watch the Japanese version instead of the English? Seems like an entirely self inflicted injury to keep watching the English version and demanding it be something else. As for the Youtube thing, that is an entirely self inflicted injury as well. Everyone knows that Youtube comments are where brain cells go to die. Though I do happen to agree that his Japanese voice is ridiculous. Seriously, he sounds like his balls never dropped. That voice doesn't belong to a grown man with that kind of build. The only way to possibly think it fits is top of the line nostalgia hearing aids.

Everyone knows that Youtube comments are where brain cells go to die. I don't watch it in English. I avoid it at every possible chance. I do however sometimes "Give it a chance" when someone mentions something like how it's improved. People keep telling me that the Kai dubbing is much better. So I sat through about 10 episodes and wanted to punch my own f***ing face in. Sean Schemmel is a f***ing hack. "King Kai's" voice is like someone put a bunch of marbles in his cheeks and is f***ing trying to talk like that... accent on f***ing purpose. It's grating and disturbing. Someone tried to tell me Beerus and Whis' voices were "pretty accurate" and I watched Battle of Gods in English and was appalled with Beerus' voice. The actor completely missed the point. The Japanese actor goes from dead serious to squeeky confusion at the drop of a hat and it adds hilarity. The English guy doesn't even sound like the same character. I've stopped giving it chances. I don't SELF-INFLICT. When I come to these boards, or I go to play games online or even to watch video on Youtube, I don't expect people are going to go out of their way to be insulting to me and the Japanese cast. Look at your example. You already went into Granny Goku mode and you are insulting the actress. It's nothing I'm not used to, but seriously... it's like looking at ignorance in black and white on a screen.

I mean, it's not going to change his opinion on the show or anything. Just makes him view you in a worse light. Unless you want to start something like an argument, this kind of stuff usually leads to those. |
wew, this is a classic case of someone who doesn't understand how localization works, hell if in Japan they referred to something I know a different way and people exposed to it called it that, I'd literally just ask what it means and go on with my day instead of complaining about it on a forum on gamefaqs

I probably could have pointed it out more politely, but my point is that he is ragging on other people for not wanting 'awful' things to be changed for nostalgia reasons but the original Japanese isn't exactly perfect itself and they can't stand people pointing those flaws out. So maybe they should lay off fans of the original English version they grew up with.

Its so grating I can't even watch the original version. I've given this example in the past. It's the best I can do when I try to explain that I understand how people who were exposed to English Goku first might react: It's like going to a restaurant, ordering a hamburger and instead of getting a hamburger, the waiter brings you some Kimchi. Your reaction is going to be shocked and appalled. Goku is not a normal sounding character. Goku doesn't "fit" with your normal ideas of a "Hero" character. It doesn't help that you've never had anything but a hamburger and expecting you to get accustomed to Kimchi when you go to a burger joint is asking a lot. That's not the question we should be asking; "Which do you like better, a hamburger or Kimchi?" What we should be doing is realizing that we are going to a Korean resturaunt and that Kimchi is on the menu and it's going to be an acquired taste, but you'll love it once you do. I promise. Instead, most English speaking Dragon Ball fans want a Hamburger in a Korean restaurant. Masako Nozawa is an extremely talented voice actress. Her brilliance can certainly be lost in translation, but once you get accustomed to her, you slowly start to realize how good she is. Saying Goku sounds like a little boy whose balls haven't dropped is incredibly ignorant and short sighted. The bottom line is, you're brainwashed and you like it that way. "Pointing out the flaws" of Japanese Dragon Ball does not include Goku's voice. That's actually one of the few things about OG Dragon Ball that's impeccable. You can throw out your choice of a voice as a preference. You do you, but sitting there trying to convince someone who has become enlightened on how good Nozawa is will get you nowhere.
