My statement was general for a reason. It's not a statement that only has or even means to have context with this topic. Everybody can quote I Have A Dream. You're not speaking of any actual knowledge of what he espoused beyond what everybody already f***ing knows. He also said that white supremacists are not the obstacle to equality, but rather, meek and half-hearted white folk who see the problem, but don't champion it. Unfortunately, that type of behavior has permeated our society. Few really want to hear the other side and reach an agreement, it seems. He explained why. Nobody should be forced to leave. People voluntarily leaving because they believe they are oppressed is a good thing because it shows others that they are valuable and could lead to their oppressors having to rethink their beliefs. This professor is 100% in the right here. When the professor tells the students he will listen to them if they listen to him, one student responds, “We don’t care what terms you want to speak on. This is not about you. We are not speaking on terms — on terms of white privilege. This is not a discussion. You have lost that one.” People who refuse to listen to what others have to say are terrible. You don't force just force your beliefs on others, you should engage with them. Debate and challenge their thoughts. Make them look deeply into themselves. Even if the students were right, by stopping real communication, anyone who disagrees with them can easily dismiss them.

This. One is a group choosing to be absent to bring awareness to a cause. Similar to a boycott of services, they choose to remove themselves to have an impact. That's not the same as one group demanding that another group just not be present for a day. Honestly, imagine if this was flipped. Take the day without women for instance. Imagine if instead of the women choosing to take the day off that all the men and said "Hey if you have a vagina don't bother showing up here tomorrow". Wouldn't be okay. Context is very important.

Agreed. It really saddens me because when I was in high school and college I honestly thought we were past this. Like there was never any of this racial stuff happening. I had white guys that I couldn't stand and that couldn't stand me but it wasn't because they were white or I'm black. Like the race of who I was dealing with on a daily basis was seriously the furthest thing from my mind and I was really proud of our society as a whole that seemingly a whole generation was going to grow up seeing race but not caring about it. I don't know what happened.

A man decided not to take the day off and got yelled at for his "privilege" by kids who are "privileged" to have money to go to college. The Horror.
Seriously, this protest is just dumb. While racism is a huge problem in American society, this protest just highlights the fact that college kids care more about protesting about small things than actually graduating and getting grades.
If I went to this college, I would have taken the day off just cuz its a day off, but these kids are just rabid. If I saw this the day after the absence day, I would have transferred/dropped out the next day. This teacher deserves a better school for wanting to work on what is pretty much a day off.

This is exactly why we don't socially swing the pendulum in the other direction to try and make up for the past. Once all the slavery and Jim Crow laws were scrapped from the book, we should have just said "okay, let's let everything work itself out over time". I mean really?
