Doing that does not impress anybody. It's annoying. They do it for lack of better social skills.The thing is since nerds typically are deficient in the social and looks categories, they have to compensate by being super-competent in the intelligence category, and hence, the desire to be smart by being technically accurate constantly

I correct people only if it's worth correcting.
e.g. they are using an incorrect term for something. If I know that they are using the wrong one, why not correct them? because if I was saying something wrong I'd want to know the correct term or phrasing.
